Veteran printer and one of the pioneers of the printing profession in Kano, Malam Sa’idu Gandu, has died at the age of 90.
Gandu died last night after he was reportedly involved in an accident with a moving vehicle while taking his routine walk around the vicinity of his residence.
He was buried this morning at the Farm Centre Cemetery in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.

Gandu spent several decades in the printing profession, working in some of Kano’s notable printing establishments, including the Government Printing Press, Mai Nasara Printing Press, the Printing Press of Kano State Polytechnic and other commercial printing houses.
His long career made him part of the generation of printers who contributed to the growth of the printing industry in Kano at a time when the profession relied heavily on practical skills and experience.
Even in old age, Gandu remained active and energetic. Until his death, he operated two bookbinding shops at the School of Technology, Kano, where he continued to practise and pass on his experience in the trade.
Beyond his professional career, Gandu was remembered by colleagues and associates for his calm disposition, humility and commitment to peace.
Those who worked with him described him as a gentleman who remained composed under pressure and often intervened to settle disagreements among co-workers.
His ability to maintain cordial relationships made him respected in the various establishments where he worked.
Gandu is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Among his children is Nura Sa’id, a former staff member of the Government Printing Press and former part-time lecturer with the Department of Printing Technology at Kano State Polytechnic, who later joined a federal establishment.
The PRO of the Kano State Polytechnic, Malama Saude Sa’idu is also among his children.
His death marks the passing of a veteran whose working life was closely connected with the development of printing in Kano.
