As Pillars Return to SAS: What I expect from fans & management

Following the recent verdict by the NFF Disciplinary Committee, which overturned the ban that had forced Kano Pillars Football Club to play their home games at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina, the team is set to return to their traditional home ground, Sani Abacha Stadium (SAS).

Kano Pillars FC served a five-match stadium suspension after the Sani Abacha Stadium was shut indefinitely following crowd disturbances during their NPFL clash with Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan on October 12, 2025.

The decision comes as a major relief for the four-time Nigerian champions, who had been forced to host their home fixtures in Katsina.

The ruling now clears the way for Kano Pillars to return to their historic home ground, restoring a sense of normalcy and pride for the team, while rekindling the bond with their passionate supporters who have long awaited a homecoming.

Their long-awaited return to the Sani Abacha Stadium (SAS) is scheduled for next weekend, when they will host Nasarawa United in what promises to be an exciting encounter.

The fixture will also mark their final game of the first stanza of the season, making the occasion even more significant for the club, the players, and the fans who have eagerly anticipated a return to their traditional home ground.

Fans and management alike are eagerly looking forward to the return, which represents a significant milestone for the club as it seeks to reclaim its traditional home advantage.

The decision was reached by the NFF Disciplinary Committee after a thorough review of the protest submitted by Kano Pillars against the NPFL sanctions.

This development has paved the way for the club to welcome fans back to the Sani Abacha Stadium, restoring the electric atmosphere long associated with Kano Pillars’ home fixtures.

Supporters can once again pack the stands and rally behind their team, beginning with the eagerly anticipated showdown against the high-flying Nasarawa United.

The return to their historic home ground is expected to provide a major lift to team morale and reignite the passion of supporters who have patiently waited for this moment.

Playing once again at the Sani Abacha Stadium is widely seen as a turning point that could spark a positive turnaround in results, help the team climb away from the bottom of the table, and ultimately steer Kano Pillars clear of the relegation zone.

However, in its findings, the Disciplinary Committee concluded that Kano Pillars did not put in place adequate and effective security arrangements, allowing unauthorized persons to gain access to restricted areas of the stadium.

The investigation also confirmed that home supporters threw objects onto the field of play, leading to a temporary stoppage of the match.

These violations not only disrupted the smooth conduct of the game but also posed serious safety risks to players, match officials, and spectators.

The Committee stressed that such failures in crowd control and stadium management are unacceptable, underscoring the urgent need for stricter and more effective security protocols to prevent a recurrence.

More seriously, it found that some supporters went beyond pitch encroachment to physically assault players and match officials of Shooting Stars, actions considered capable of bringing the game and the league into serious disrepute.

The gravity of these incidents exposed major shortcomings in crowd management and raised serious concerns about the safety of participants and the overall integrity of league matches.

In response, the Committee upheld the sanction deducting three points and three goals from Kano Pillars’ accumulated tally, specifically for the assault on match officials, a decision that reinforces the league’s firm commitment to discipline and the protection of all participants during fixtures.

And now that the consequences of those actions have been felt, it is now the moment to calls for sober reflection and careful reassessment, so that clear lessons are learned and effective corrective measures are put in place.

Both the club’s management and its supporters must accept responsibility, work together to ensure that such incidents do not recur and that the proud reputation of Kano Pillars, along with the integrity of the league is safeguarded.

Going forward, the supporters’ club and the management of Kano Pillars FC must adopt deliberate, proactive strategies to prevent any repeat of the unsportsmanlike conduct that led to the NPFL-imposed banishment.

They must work together to design and implement effective strategies that enhance crowd management, enforce stricter and more coordinated security protocols, and promote a strong culture of discipline, responsibility, and mutual respect among supporters.

By putting these measures in place, future matches can be staged in a safe, orderly, and professional atmosphere, the one that truly reflects the stature, tradition, and prestige of Kano Pillars FC and helps restore full confidence in the club’s matchday organization.

These steps will not only protect the well-being of the club’s own players and officials but also guarantee the safety of visiting teams, match officials, and spectators alike, fostering an atmosphere of fair play and respect that upholds the integrity of the game.

The management must also act with foresight and prudence, taking all necessary and appropriate measures to prevent unnecessary tension or conflicts during matches, especially at home.

This includes careful planning, clear communication with supporters, strict enforcement of stadium rules, and proactive engagement with security personnel.

Additionally, the club can focus on building positive relationships with match officials through proper hospitality and professional courtesy, ensuring a respectful and well-managed matchday environment that reflects the standards and reputation of Kano Pillars FC.

By implementing these measures, the club can ensure that every home fixture runs smoothly, providing a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for players, officials, and fans alike, while upholding the reputation and dignity of Kano Pillars FC.

This involves proactively identifying and addressing potential sources of conflict, maintaining clear and consistent communication with supporters, enforcing robust security and crowd-control measures, and fostering a calm, disciplined, and professional atmosphere throughout the stadium.

By taking these steps, the club can significantly minimize disruptions, safeguard the safety of players and officials, and create an environment where both the team and supporters can fully enjoy matches without fear of incidents that could damage the club’s reputation or lead to sanctions.

The management must also understand that success in the Nigerian league is not determined solely by performance on the pitch; effective organization, strong fan engagement, disciplined matchday operations and seeking the assistance of referees are equally critical to sustaining long-term success.

Many clubs often engage in strategic interactions with match officials off the field, using influence and other factors to gain favorable outcomes.

Over time, some clubs have perfected these tactics, which have contributed to their consistent ability to secure positive results, not only during home matches but sometimes even in away games.

Understanding this reality is crucial for Kano Pillars’ management, as it underscores the importance of combining strong on-field performance with careful administrative and strategic management off the field to remain competitive in the league.

In my view, this is the only effective way to prevent or minimize trouble from spectators following disappointing home match results.

By combining strong security measures, careful crowd management, proactive engagement with fans and match official ‘settlement’, the club can reduce the risk of unrest and ensure that matches are conducted in a safe, orderly, and enjoyable environment for everyone involved.

A single warning or piece of advice is sufficient for those who are wise and discerning enough to understand its meaning.
