The deteriorating state of Nigerian football is becoming a growing source of concern among football system deserves better leadership and clearer direction

Recent disappointing performances by Nigeria’s national teams have intensified the debate over the management of Nigerian sports under the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade.

stakeholders, football administrators, coaches, and passionate supporters who believe that the country’s For many observers, the growing frustration is no longer limited to results on the pitch; it is increasingly about leadership priorities, administrative direction, and the future of Nigerian football.

The woeful display by Nigeria’s U-17 national team against Niger Republic has raised serious questions about the state of youth football development.

At a time when Nigeria should be investing in identifying young talents, strengthening grassroots competitions, improving technical preparation, and building competitive age-grade teams, such performances are forcing stakeholders to demand answers.

Nigeria’s football history was built on a strong foundation of youth development, technical discipline, and the discovery of exceptional talents.

The country has produced generations of players who became international stars because of a football structure that gave young footballers opportunities to develop and compete.

Any signs of decline at this level should therefore be treated as a serious warning, not dismissed as an ordinary setback.

The situation has been made more uncomfortable by the Super Eagles’ disappointing defeat to Madagascar.

For a country with Nigeria’s football pedigree, such a result inevitably raises questions about preparation, tactical organisation, team cohesion, and the effectiveness of the broader football administration.

The growing criticism has placed the leadership direction associated with Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade under increased public scrutiny.

Stakeholders are asking whether the current sports administration is delivering the reforms, technical improvements, and institutional stability that Nigerian football urgently needs.

The NSC must understand that leadership in sports cannot be measured by administrative announcements, political influence, or control over sporting institutions alone.

Its credibility must ultimately be demonstrated through effective policies, improved development structures, transparent administration, and an environment in which athletes and national teams can perform to their full potential.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
