Appointment of Gara Gombe: Where I got it wrong

Unlike what I insinuated yesterday in one of my write-ups over the appointment of Shuaibu Gara Gombe as the Deputy National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) by the national body of the association, fresh facts from the secretariat have confirmed that Gara Gombe is a bonafide member of the association.

According to the information I gathered, Gara Gombe is the publisher and CEO of North-east Times, a publication which carries different news items and sports news inclusive.

Gara Gombe’s romance with SWAN members and the association itself was traced many decades ago as he was said to be with SWAN members during his days in Lagos.

Shaibu Gara Gombe was said to be fully registered as a member of the association by the impeached president Mr. Isaiah Benjamin.

I was also told that, as a publisher, who publishes sports stories in his publication, Gara can be appointed or elected to occupy any position in SWAN.

I was even supplied with video clips where Gara was discussing the press SWAN crisis and his position as a member.

But what I don’t really understand is whether somebody can hold a national office without first serving in any capacity in a state chapter.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
