The Northwest University Kano contingent in the ongoing 2025 Nigeria University Games (NUGA) hosted by the University of Jos made an impressive mark after  the showcasing determination, skill, and competitive spirit.

Despite being a relatively young institution in the NUGA arena, the university’s athletes demonstrated exceptional commitment as they battled against top universities from across the country.

Their hard work paid off as the contingent secured a total of three medals, a testament to the university’s growing investment in sports development and talent nurturing.

The medal haul—earned across different sporting categories—highlights the versatility and promise of the athletes representing Northwest University Kano.

Beyond the medals, the university’s participation at NUGA UNIJOS 2025 also provided a valuable platform for its athletes to gain exposure, build confidence, and deepen their competitive experience.

The management, coaches, and supporters have expressed pride in the team’s achievements, describing the performance as a strong foundation for even greater success in future editions of the games.

With this impressive outing, Northwest University Kano has announced itself as an emerging force in university sports, and its athletes have shown that with the right support and dedication, they can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the country.

The University athletes won 3 medals as follows:

    2. Bronze Medal in Judo event -100kg won by Aliyu Umar Aliyu
    3. Bronze Medal in Chess Event won by Esther Momoh

Among the accompanying officials was Prof. Abubakar Salisu Garba, the Chairman of the Northwest University Sports Advisory Committee.

Prof. Garba, known for his deep commitment to youth development and university sports, played a pivotal role in guiding and motivating the athletes throughout the competition.

His presence not only boosted the morale of the contingent but also demonstrated the university’s dedication to strengthening its sports programs.

He was joined by other key officials who collectively ensured smooth coordination, proper welfare, and strategic support for the athletes.

Their combined efforts contributed greatly to the impressive performance of the team and underscored the importance of administrative backing in achieving sporting excellence.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
