Youth Games: My appeal to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf

Your Excellency Sir, I write to bring to your knowledge that the 8th edition of Nigeria’s second prestigious National Youth Games which is slated for Asaba, the vibrant capital of Delta State is here again.

It is indeed the country’s second largest sports event which is billed to commence on the 10th of September and ends on 20th of the same month this 2024.

Sir, the main venue for the event is expected to be held in the iconic Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

Sir, Team  Kano is also expected to make the total number of the 5,000 athletes that will participate in the Games which the  Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the event will be making use of some selected school hostels to accommodate them.

But the One million Naira question on the lips of every sports stakeholder begging for an answer is how prepared is Kano state?

Beneath the surface, I was reliably told that the Kano State Sports Commission had worked day and night in readiness for the event.

I was told that the commission’s management had directed all their coaches to prepare their respective teams for the purpose of achieving better results than that of the previous outings.

But what is not certain is its proposed budget which I was also told was already before the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf for approval.

If that is the case, I want to appeal to the governor to do that as quickly as possible so that preparation will continue without any hitches.

Early preparation will allow Team Kano to put all finishing touches depart early and arrive early, safely and in good time.

Your Excellency needs to know that approving and releasing the approved amount in good time has many advantages which will no doubt bring better result at the end of the event.

I pray His Excellency will not delay approving the requested amount so that many things that need to be planned, organized and strategies before the team finally leave for Asaba, Delta state will be done in earnest.

Lastly, my word of caution to the sports commission is to try and avoid the repetition of the Abuja trip mistake where majority of the supporting staff like medical team, drivers were denied theist DTA.

The commission should try and bring that sad development back by reminding the governor so that those deprived of their DTA will finally get it.

I wish you a safe trip and a good outing.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
