The Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano (YUMSUK) had successfully concluded its 2024 Inter-Faculty Games on Tuesday, 26th November, with a colorful closing ceremony. The grand finale, held at the university’s sports complex, was a celebration of athleticism, camaraderie, and excellence.

According to Abubakar Ibrahim, the Head of Public Relations Unit  of the university, the highlight of the event was the football final between the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences. The thrilling match ended in a 1-1 draw, leading to a penalty shootout where the Faculty of Education emerged victorious.

The week-long competition featured an array of sporting activities, including football, chess, langa, egg and spoon race, table tennis, taekwondo, 100m sprints for males and females, sack races, and karate. Participants showcased their talents in the various events, with winners rewarded on the spot with monetary prizes, medals, and certificates of participation.

The closing ceremony was graced by prominent personalities, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Abubakar Salisu Garba, who represented the Vice Chancellor and served as Chairman of the University Sports Committee. Other distinguished guests included Rabiu Ali (Pele), the captain of Kano Pillars Football Club; the Manager of Foster Clark & Ciara Mr. Varun; the Chairman of Gwale United Football Club, Alhaji Mustapha Maichitta; the Director of Procurement, Abubakar Muhammad; and the University Internal Auditor, Malam Alasan Salihu, Chairman NASU YUMSUK branch, Comrade Bashir Muhammad Bala among others.

Professor Abubakar Salisu Garba was also recognized with a Certificate of Excellence for his contributions to the successful organization of the games. Likewise Rabiu Ali (Pele) was also honored.

The event was organized under the dynamic leadership of the Head of the Sports Directorate, Comrade Suraj Ahmad, whose efforts were widely praised. In his closing remarks, Comrade Suraj Ahmad expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the event’s success, particularly the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa. He highlighted the Vice Chancellor’s support for education and sports, which has brought significant infrastructural and developmental changes to the university.

Medals were awarded to winners across all sports categories, while certificates of participation were issued to all participants. The games were described by many staff and students as the most comprehensive and successful sporting activity in the university’s history, thanks to the innovative initiatives introduced by the newly appointed head of Sports Directorate, comrade Ahmad Suraj.

The event not only celebrated sporting excellence but also showed a sense of unity and healthy competition among faculties, setting a high standard for future editions.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
