The Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University, Kano (KHAIRUN) has  organized a one-day follow-up seminar on the State of Emergency (SOE) in education declared by the Kano State Government.

The event was held at KHAIRUN’s campus, drew distinguished guests and stakeholders from across the state and outside to deliberate on the significance of education.

A statement signed by the university head of corporate affairs and marketing department, Bilal Dahiru Tijjani said the Chairman of the occasion and also KHAIRUN’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Professor  Kabiru Isyaku  praised the Kano State Government for its bold step in declaring the State of Emergency describing it as a move in the right direction.

He emphasized the need for including seasoned educationists with proven track records in the implementation process.

He also called on the government to address the rising demand for education through increased funding and infrastructure.

Furthermore, he urged schools and institutions to produce graduates equipped with entrepreneurial skills that enable them to create opportunities rather than solely relying on salaried employment.

Earlier KHAIRUN’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, also commended the state government for its efforts to enhance education at all levels, particularly at the foundational level.

Professor Abdulrashid Garba then reaffirmed the university’s commitment in supporting this initiative as a key stakeholder.

The vice chancellor however, advocated for a comprehensive blueprint, adequate budget allocation, legal enforcement, and a dedicated implementation committee to ensure the SOE’s success.

He also stressed the importance of upholding the Universal Basic Education (UBE) law, which mandates free and compulsory primary and junior secondary education.

He called for community mobilization to encourage parental involvement and suggested introducing measures to hold parents accountable for their children’s education.

In her presentation, Prof. Hassana Sani Darma  highlighted the seminar’s purpose, rooted in the State of Emergency  declaration by Kano State Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.

She reiterated the vision of the SOE, which prioritizes advancing education in Kano State and beyond, underscoring the necessity of collective effort in achieving this goal.

Responding, the representative of the state government, the permanent secretary in the state ministry of education,  Alhaji Bashir Baffa Muhammad has reiterated the state government commitment towards the overall development of education in the state.

He assured that the present administration will continue  to work with relevant stakeholders especially in the education sector aimed at actualizing the state emergency on education in the state.

Alhaji Muhammad explained that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf  has keen interest and concerns on improving the fortunes of education in the state.

He added that the state government has earmarked over 30 percent of its 2025 budget with a view to restore the lost glory of education across the state.

The seminar concluded with a shared resolution among participants to champion the state’s educational advance

I was at the production unit of the Triumph Publishing Company, Kano but my keen interest in sports journalism made me to be sports writer and maintained a sports column called (Sports Eye) after my mentor Sani Muhammad Zaria transferred his service to New Nigeria newspapers in Kaduna. And when the government closed the Triumph in 2012, I was transfered to lectured DTP in the Department of Printing Technology of Kano State Polytechnic. And now that I retired, i used to visit the institution weekends for part-time lecturing.
