    Gombe Emir’s Cup: Organisers unveil quarter-final fixtures, match dates

    The organisers of the ongoing 2026 Gombe Emir’s Cup soccer competition tagged ‘King’s Cup’ has released the fixture and date for the quarter final matches.

    The tournament, organized and sponsored by Hon. Ahmad Shuaibu Gara Gombe, the Chief Executive Officer of Green White Green attracted both emirates and traditional council football teams in attendance.

    According to the fixture, Gomber Emirate council football team to confront it Funakaye counterpart on July 18, 2026 at Deba township stadium by 3:00pm, Late SHEHU Abubakar team to entertain Tula traditional council on July 19, Pindiga versus Nafada Emirate council on July 20 while Dukku Emirate council team to face Dadiya traditional council on July 21.

    The aims of the tournament is to create a platform for the players to showcase their skills, talents and unity among various ethnics community across the state.

    Alhaji Ahmad Shuaibu Gara Gombe, who is the former chairman of Gombe state Football Association and Gombe United FC, described the championship so far as a huge success, urging the participant teams, officials and officiating officials to sustain the tempo towards the success and hitch free tournament.

    The date for the semi and final matches would be announced later.

    Meanwhile, Governor Inuwa Yahaya, the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Shehu Abubakar, the President of the Nigerian Football Federation NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau were expected to be among the special guests at the closing ceremony scheduled to hold later in the year.

    I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
