It is no longer news that the Kano State Government has reconstituted the Board of the Kano State Sports Commission, with the newly appointed leadership already assuming responsibility for the administration of the Commission.

It was last week, that the new board formally took over the affairs of the Commission following a brief but significant handover ceremony held at the Commission’s headquarters.

During the event, the immediate past Acting Chairman, Dr. Murtala Musa, officially handed over the mantle of leadership to the newly appointed Chairman, Alhaji Tukur Babangida, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the administration of sports in Kano State.

The handover ceremony, which was witnessed by management and staff of the Commission as well as other stakeholders, symbolised a smooth transition of leadership and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening sports administration in the state.

For sure the appointment of Alhaji Tukur Babangida, a seasoned sports administrator with decades of experience in sports development and football management, has generated optimism among athletes, coaches, administrators and sports enthusiasts.

Many believe his wealth of experience, combined with the expertise of other members of the board, will provide the strategic direction needed to revitalise sports development in Kano State.

For sure the new board assumes office at a critical time when expectations are high for the revival of grassroots sports, the rehabilitation of sporting infrastructure, improved athlete welfare, enhanced funding, and the restoration of Kano State’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting hubs.

Consequently, stakeholders will be looking to the Babangida-led board to translate the confidence reposed in it by the Kano State Government into tangible achievements that will positively impact the state’s sporting landscape.

Virtually every stakeholder within and outside Kano’s sporting community, including my mentor, Sani Muhammed Zaria, has expressed high hopes for the leadership of Alhaji Tukur Babangida.

There is a widespread belief that the new Chairman and his team possess the experience, integrity and administrative competence needed to reverse the fortunes of sports in the state.

Many are optimistic that the Babangida-led board will address the challenges that have plagued Kano sports in recent years, including poor administration, inadequate funding, decaying sporting infrastructure, weak grassroots development and declining performances at national competitions.

Stakeholders expect the new leadership to restore professionalism, accountability and strategic planning, thereby bringing an end to the cycle of setbacks and misfortunes that has overshadowed the state’s sporting sector in recent times.

In his thought-provoking article titled “Kano Sports at a Crossroads: Tukur Babangida’s Opportunity,” veteran sports journalist and administrator, who was the President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN), Sani Muhammad Zaria, described the appointment of Alhaji Tukur Babangida as a rare opportunity not only to revive Kano State’s sports structures but also to reimagine a system capable of restoring the state’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting powerhouses.

According to Zaria, Babangida’s greatest strength lies in his intimate knowledge of the Kano sports ecosystem.

“This is an opportunity not only to revive existing structures but to reimagine a system that can restore Kano’s position as one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting states,” he wrote.

He continued that, “Babangida’s advantage is his deep understanding of the Kano sports environment. He is not an outsider coming to study the terrain; he is a participant in the history of Kano’s sporting evolution.”

Zaria then noted that Babangida’s impressive track record places him in a strong position to lead meaningful reforms.

“As a former Director of Sports, Chairman of the Management Committee of Kano Pillars, and an active figure who represented Kano at both state and national levels, he carries with him invaluable institutional memory and practical experience.”

The former National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) further observed that Babangida belongs to the generation of sports administrators mentored during the era of the late Ibrahim Galadima, a period widely regarded as the golden age of sports administration in Kano State.

“More importantly, he was part of the era inspired by the late Ibrahim Galadima, an era many consider the golden period of Kano sports administration. Galadima’s philosophy was built on vision, organisation, discipline, talent development and purposeful investment.”

Sani Zaria, as he is fondly known within sports circles, however, cautioned that the task before Babangida extends beyond preserving that legacy.

According to him, the new Chairman must build on the achievements of the past while developing a modern sports administration model capable of addressing today’s realities and future challenges.

He therefore recommended that Babangida’s first major assignment should be the convening of a comprehensive Kano State Sports Stakeholders’ Summit.

“Before policies are announced and projects are launched, there must be a clear understanding of where Kano sports stands today,” he explained.

He stressed that the summit should bring together former athletes, coaches, administrators, sports associations, educational institutions, private investors and other critical stakeholders to honestly assess the current state of sports in Kano.

“Stakeholders should come together to answer some fundamental questions: What worked in the past? What went wrong? What opportunities exist? And where does Kano want to be in five, ten or twenty years?”

According to Zaria, the outcome of such a summit would provide the blueprint for a realistic, inclusive and sustainable sports development agenda capable of returning Kano State to its rightful place as a dominant force in Nigerian sports.

Sani Muhammad Zaria further argued that one of the greatest challenges facing the new leadership of the Kano State Sports Commission is changing the long-held perception that sports development in the state revolves solely around football.

While acknowledging the iconic status of Kano Pillars Football Club and its importance to the state’s sporting identity, Zaria maintained that sustainable sports development requires equal attention to other sporting disciplines.

“One of the biggest challenges will be breaking away from the mindset that Kano sports is only about football. Kano Pillars remains a major sporting brand and deserves continued support, but a truly successful sports system must be much wider.”

He stressed that the Commission must adopt an inclusive approach by investing in multiple sports capable of producing athletes who can excel at national and international levels.

“Athletics, basketball, boxing, volleyball, handball, martial arts and traditional sports must receive serious attention. Kano has enormous human talent, but talent without structure, quality coaching, modern facilities and competitive opportunities will remain nothing more than undiscovered potential.”

According to Zaria, broadening the state’s sporting focus would not only create more opportunities for young athletes but also enhance Kano’s chances of reclaiming its position as one of Nigeria’s leading producers of sporting talent across a wide range of disciplines.

Honestly, I have always regarded Sani Muhammed Zaria as my mentor and the man who planted the seed of sports journalism in me.

His advice to Alhaji Tukur Babangida and his board was sincere, practical, and timely. What remains now is for the new leadership to translate those recommendations into meaningful action.

Like Sani Zaria, many stakeholders who welcomed Babangida’s appointment have made it clear that they expect much more from his administration.

Their expectations are understandable because sports development in Kano State has suffered from years of neglect, with numerous challenges demanding urgent attention.

One of the most pressing priorities is the rehabilitation of the state’s sporting infrastructure. Modern sports cannot thrive in outdated facilities.

Stadiums, training grounds, indoor sports halls, and community sporting centres must be renovated, upgraded, and properly equipped to meet contemporary standards.

Quality infrastructure is essential for talent development, athlete welfare, and the successful hosting of sporting events.

However, even before embarking on these long-term projects, the Babangida-led board must focus on an immediate assignment. The National Sports Festival is only a few months away, leaving little room for delay.

By now, the board should have commenced a comprehensive assessment of Kano State’s athletes across all sports to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and areas requiring improvement.

Such an evaluation will enable the Commission to determine where reinforcement is necessary, whether through recruiting additional athletes, engaging more qualified coaches, improving training programmes, or providing better technical support.

This strategic approach will strengthen both team and individual events, increase competitiveness, and significantly improve Kano State’s chances of winning more medals at the National Sports Festival and other major competitions.

The task before the new board is enormous, but with proper planning, decisive leadership, and timely execution, it has an opportunity to restore Kano State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting powerhouses.

Another major priority for the Babangida-led board must be the complete revitalisation of inter-secondary school sports competitions.

The world’s leading sporting nations invest heavily in school sports because that is where future champions are identified, nurtured, and developed.

If Kano is serious about reclaiming its place as a sporting powerhouse, it must rebuild a school sports system that is regular, competitive, professionally organised, and seamlessly linked to higher levels of athlete development.

The Babangida administration must also embrace professionalism in every aspect of sports governance. Sports associations and development programmes should be managed by individuals with the necessary technical competence, integrity, and a clear commitment to measurable performance targets.

The era of treating sports administration as merely a bureaucratic exercise must give way to a results-oriented system driven by planning, accountability, and excellence.

Equally important, Babangida must resist the temptation to focus solely on immediate successes.

While winning trophies and medals is desirable, building a sustainable sports ecosystem that consistently produces talented athletes, qualified coaches, competent officials, and capable administrators is far more significant.

Lasting success is measured not by a single victory but by the strength of the structures that continue to produce excellence year after year.

Ultimately, the true measure of this administration’s success will be reflected in the number of young talents discovered and developed, the revival of neglected sporting disciplines, the restoration of functional sporting facilities, and the ability of Kano athletes to compete and excel at both national and international levels.

As Sani Muhammed Zaria rightly observed, the enduring legacy of Ibrahim Galadima remains a powerful reminder of what visionary and purposeful leadership can accomplish.

Alhaji Tukur Babangida now has the rare privilege and responsibility of building upon that foundation and leading Kano sports into a new era of excellence.

The assignment before him is enormous, but the foundation is solid. With vision, commitment, and decisive leadership, the opportunity to restore Kano’s status as one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting states is well within reach.

Finally, with experienced sports administrators such as Ibrahim Abba, Dr. Bashari Ahmad Maizare, Ahmad  Surajo, and other accomplished members serving on the board, coupled with the unwavering support of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, there is every reason to believe that Alhaji Tukur Babangida’s administration has the capacity to succeed.

The expertise within the board, if effectively harnessed, provides a solid platform for meaningful reforms and sustainable sports development in Kano State.

However, expectations are high, and the people of Kano will judge the board not by promises but by tangible results.

Like many other stakeholders, I wish Alhaji Tukur Babangida and his team every success in this important assignment.

We will be watching with great interest, hopeful that this marks the beginning of a new and prosperous chapter for sports in Kano State.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
