Planning and preparations for the 2026 Kano State Higher Institutions Games Association (KASHIGA) Staff Games have commenced, with the organisers intensifying efforts to ensure a successful and memorable sporting event.

Officials of the association, under the leadership of Mal. Bashir Abba, Director of Sports at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, have embarked on a series of visits and courtesy calls to key institutions and stakeholders considered critical to the successful organisation of the games.

According to the association’s Secretary, Malam Jamilu Abdulhamid Bello of the Kano State College of Education and Preliminary Studies (CAS Kano), the visits are part of the preparations for the forthcoming games and are aimed at strengthening collaboration, fostering understanding and securing the necessary support from relevant stakeholders.

Malam Jamilu explained that, unlike previous editions, the 2026 edition would focus exclusively on staff games, providing members of staff of participating higher institutions with an opportunity to showcase their sporting talents, promote teamwork and strengthen unity and camaraderie among the institutions.

As part of the preparations, the association recently paid a courtesy visit to the new leadership of the Kano State Sports Commission. The visit was aimed at formally introducing the 2026 KASHIGA Staff Games programme to the commission, briefing its leadership on the association’s plans and seeking support and collaboration towards the successful conduct of the competition.

The delegation also used the opportunity to congratulate the new leadership of the Kano State Sports Commission on their appointments, expressing optimism that the new administration would contribute positively to the development and promotion of sports across Kano State.

According to the secretary, five institutions have so far been visited, namely Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo; Aminu Kano College of Education and Preliminary Studies; Alhassan Ibrahim Dawanau College of Health Sciences, UDB Road; and Federal College of Agricultural Produce, Hotoro, Kano, among others.Kashiga 5

He further disclosed that the delegation had the opportunity to meet with the heads of all state-owned tertiary institutions in Kano State, led by Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai, Vice Chancellor of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, during a meeting held at Kano State Polytechnic.Kashiga3

The engagement, according to the association, is expected to enhance cooperation among the participating institutions and create a stronger foundation for the successful organisation of the staff games.

The 2026 KASHIGA Staff Games are expected to provide staff members with a platform to participate actively in sporting activities while promoting healthy competition, teamwork, friendship and institutional unity.Kashiga 4

Meanwhile, the organisers are working on key aspects of the competition, including scheduling, logistics, participating institutions, sporting disciplines and other necessary arrangements ahead of the official commencement of the games.Kashiga 6

Further details regarding the participating institutions, sporting events and opening ceremony are expected to be announced as preparations progress.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
