At the end of its Virtual National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which was presided over by the President, Otuekong Bonny Nyong, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has deliberated on all pending issues and resolves as follows: –

According to a communique issued at the end of the meeting which was made available to www.sportseye.ng, the meeting first formally welcomed the recently appointed Deputy President, Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, to his first NEC meeting appearance.

It went further to upheld the impeachment of its former president Isaiah Benjamin of the association and further admonished that no one should deal with him as the president of SWAN any longer.

The meeting also announced the Peter Abaje-led executive as the only officially recognized SWAN leadership in Rivers State and then called on the Rivers State Government and other stakeholders to give them full support and cooperation.

The Olatutu Oladunni-led executive is also the only officially recognized SWAN leadership in Lagos State and also urged the Lagos State Government and other stakeholders to give them support and cooperation.

The meeting also recognized the Caretaker Committee in Gombe State, with election to take place when all requirements relating to the provisions in SWAN Statutes have been complied with.

The NEC then warns Kano State chapter of SWAN against constituting any frivolous committee for Full Council Meeting, as it is the sole responsibility of the NEC to do so at the appropriate time.

The NEC then commends the Board of Trustees (BOT) for its efforts at ensuring a progressive Association.

The meeting lastly called on all state Chapters to ignore any directive, not emanating from the office of President Bonny Nyong as all such orders are null and void.

The NEC also suspended the Secretary General, Ikenna Okonkwo, for misleading the public and refusing to take directives from the president, Otuekong Bonny Nyong.

The Communique Drafting Committee was headed by Azuka Chiemeka while Seun Ajayi Obe served as a member and  Muhammad Mansour Ibrahim, the VP North, was the Secretary.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
