The Khalifah Isyaku Rabiu University (KHAIRUN), Kano has honoured the winner of the Qur’anic recitation competition held recently in Jordan, Malama Hajara Dan Azumi Gombe for her outstanding performance.

The event took place at the Alhaji Mai Deribe Theater within the university premises, and was organised by the International Institute of Qur’anic Sciences (IIQS) in the university.

According to the university’s vice chancellor, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, Gombe’s brilliant performance at the international competition is commendable.

Professor Garba said her clinching  of the laurel really shows that Nigeria has potential citizens who can rule the world in every aspect of human endeavor.

He added that Malama Gombe has done a lot not only  in projecting the good image of Nigeria, but her state Gombe and northern Nigeria in general.

The vice chancellor explained that the university is really proud of her performance, urging her to sustain the tempo while appealing to other students to emulate this feat.

He praised her parents for playing a vital role in her remarkable achievements and pledged that the university management will continue to work hard in the promotion of Qur’anic studies so as to ensure that the institution produces many of such winners in the future.

Earlier, the coordinator of the IIQS, Barrister Habib Dan Almajiri, described Malama Hajara Dan Azumi performance as well deserved considering the past record of Nigeria in the arena of international Qur’anic recitation competition in the world.

In their separate remarks, the winner of the competition and her father Alhaji Muhammad Dan Azumi Gombe thanked the management of KHAIRUN for deciding to organize and  honor them, pointing out that the gesture is a way of encouraging and supporting parents and students.

Highlights of the event include presentation of gifts, cash and group photographs.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
