    Yobe girls deserve gifts

By Dr Isa Muhammad Inuwa, BUK

We haven’t recovered from the shock of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s lavish gifts to players of the female national football and basketball teams, the Falcons and the D’Tigress, when two girls from Yobe state emerged as overall winners of the English Language Debate Competition in London.

If President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would largesse the Falconets and D’Tigress their respective victories in sports, Nafisa Abdullahi, 17 and Rukayya Muhammad Fema, 15, the Yobe girls who beat 20, 000 participants from 67 counties in the London Teenage English competition, deserve better (more than just equal) treatment.

In what is seen to have stirred a profound nation-wide uproar, President Tinubu dolled out 200, 000 dollars, worth about 160 million Naira.

This was in addition to 3 bedroom apartments in Abuja, plus national honours given to each player of the Nigeria’s female football and Basketball players

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
