Saturday of last week was a horrible day that we will never forget. On their way home from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, our young athlete, administrators, journalists, medical team members, and a driver were tragically killed in a car accident.

The unfortunate and awful incident that has left our entire state and Nigerian sports community in pain and mourning occurred near Dakatsalle town, about a kilometer from Kano.

This site identified the following individuals who died: Abdul’aziz Auwalu (Sec of Chairman/Director Office), Ibrahim Salisu Galadima (PRO), Bashir Bello Yar gaya (Org Sec B/ball), Abdullahi Saleh Trigger (Coach Kickboxing), and Nasiru Abdullahi (Org Sec Kickboxing).

Athletes include Nasiru Adam, Bello Muhd, Hamal Dahiru, Usaini Garba, Isah Usman Aliyu, Isah Ibrahim, Aminu Muhammad, Shehu Saidu, Usman Muhammad, Sani Yusuf, Muhammad Aminu (Alaja), and Abubakar Isma’il Yakubu.

The accident also claimed the lives of Imamumalik Umar and Abdussamad Rabiu, physiotherapists, Bilal Salisu (Jegus Photography), Ashiru Shu’aibu (Motor Mate), (Physiotherapist), and Abdurrahman Muhd (Senior Driver).

It is with great regret that I send my heartfelt condolences to the Kano State Government, the State Sports Commission, and the families of those who died.

May the spirits of the fallen heroes rest in eternal peace, and my heartfelt condolences go out to the deceased’s bereaved families, friends, and co-workers.

It is undeniable that this heinous event not only robbed us of our lives, but also caused significant harm to our sporting community.

I also joined hundreds in honoring the efforts of emergency responders and medical staff who rushed to the scene to assist.

And for the few people in the hospital, I pray for a rapid response and recovery from medical treatment.

May Allah give the relatives of the departed the strength to bear this irreparable loss?

I was at the production unit of the Triumph Publishing Company, Kano but my keen interest in sports journalism made me to be sports writer and maintained a sports column called (Sports Eye) after my mentor Sani Muhammad Zaria transferred his service to New Nigeria newspapers in Kaduna. And when the government closed the Triumph in 2012, I was transfered to lectured DTP in the Department of Printing Technology of Kano State Polytechnic. And now that I retired, i used to visit the institution weekends for part-time lecturing.
