The Kano State Government has concluded all arrangements for the successful hosting of this year’s Inter-Secondary Schools Savannah Conference Basketball Championship for boys and girls, scheduled to hold from May 6 to 13, 2026.

The championship is expected to attract participation from ten states, including Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, Zamfara, Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Gombe, and the host state, Kano.

Speaking on the preparations, the Head of Schools Sports at the State Ministry of Education, Malam Kabiru Shehu, stated that officials of the Nigerian School Sports Federation, the competition sponsors Nestlé Milo, and the host committee have been working tirelessly to ensure a smooth and hitch-free championship.

While commending Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and commissioner of education Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda as well as other stakeholders for their commitment and support, he called on the partipating states to give the organizers all maximum support and cooperation towards the success of the tournament.

The winners for both boys and girls would proceed to Lagos for the final stage of the competition schedule to hold later in the year.

Similarly, the President of the Nigerian School Sports Federation NSSF,  Mrs Olabisi Joseph has announced  other three hosting Conference states namely: Kwara, Oyo and Delta.

According to the president, the Central conference will run from May 14th to 21st in Ilorin, Kwara state and Atlantic conference is from June 2nd to 9th while Western conference will take place from June 10th to 17th in Ibadan, Oyo state.

While expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission led by Malam Shehu Dikko, the sponsors of basketball, Nestle Milo company, the Nigerian Basketball Federation NBBF and other stakeholders for their positive impact and contribution, she called for more support aimed at keeping engaging teeming youth through sporting activities and academically.

The grand final for boys and girls category will play at the indoor sports hall of National stadium, Surulere, Lagos later in the year.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
