Revitalization of Kano sports: Engr Yusuf urges to appoint Rabiu, Maizare to head Kano State Sports Commission

In his Memo to the Kano state Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf titled: “the urgent need to transform Kano State Sports Commission” the Secretary of the Kano Pillars Football Club Management Board, Comrade Sani Ibrahim Coach, PhD has made some salient and valid observation on the sad state of Kano State Sports Commission and the urgent need to resuscitate it.

Doctor Sani Ibrahim, an ardent supporter of the Kwankwasiyya Movement who is also an expert and a specialist in physical and Health Education and Sports traced the history of Sports Councils in Nigeria which later metamorphosis to Sports Commissions in most states of the country in a Memo which was made available to this site.

“Nigerian Sports Councils were established under Decree No.34 of 1971 during the military administration of General Yakubu Gowon,” Doctor Sani Ibrahim stated.

He observed that sports continue to grow in Nigeria and the 1st National Sports Festival and the 3rd All Africa Games were hosted in Lagos in 1973.

Sports Councils, according to him, were later transformed into commissions with a view to improve service delivery and promotion of sports in the country.

But sadly, he observed that sports in Kano is going nowhere and has not been developed despite government huge spending in the sector.

To arrest this sad, ugly and unfortunate incident, Doctor Sani Ibrahim recommended specialists in PHE and sports and or equivalent to the governments to take over the commission and save the sad situation.

“Deterioration in the commission had become too rampant and widely opened with alarming rate due to lack of initiatives for sports engagement in Kano state,” he added.

Doctor Sani Ibrahim further observed that research and investigation conducted by some specialist in sports some time ago have revealed that to do away with incompetence and deterioration in sporting activities in the state only experts and professionals in sports management and administration are to be appointed to serve in the sports commission.

The Kano Pillars FC Management Board Secretary then forwarded his prayer and recommendation to the government for further action to save sports from incompetent leaders.

His hope and prayer is that for a committee to be put in place with indigenous experts in PHE such as Professor Rabi’u Muhammad of PHE Department Bayero University, Kano and Dr. Bashir Ahmed Maizare, also a specialist in sports management and administration to reactivate and revitalize sports in Kano state.

Dr Sani is of the opinion that our PHE graduates who are wandering the streets can positively contribute in developing sports in Kano and Nigeria.

To him, those serving in the commission are too incompetent and incapacitated in sports management and administration to bring any meaningful development in Kano state sports.

This according to him is because they lack basic expertise, skills and experience to initiate programmes that can develop our fledgling sports.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
