The Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano (YUMSUK) has witnessed a transformative era in sports development under the leadership of its newly appointed Head of the Directorate of Sports, Mr. Ahmad Suraj.

Among the standout achievements according to Abubakar Ibrahim, the Head of Public Relations Unit.was the recently organized Inter-Faculty Sports Competition, a first in the university’s history, which encouraged unity, talent discovery, and sportsmanship among students.

The event also created an opportunity for external stakeholders to honor key figures in the university’s administration. Mr. Ibrahim B. Auwal, Chairman of External Clubs utilizing YUMSUK’s sports facilities, alongside his Secretary, Mukhtar Akilu Haruna, presented awards of excellence to Professor Abubakar Salisu Garba, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), and Mr. Ahmad Suraj for their remarkable contributions to sports development.

Although unable to attend the competition due to other commitments, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa later hosted Mr. Ibrahim B. Auwal and Mukhtar Akilu Haruna in his office on Friday, December 20, 2024.

During the meeting, plans were set in motion to formalize the partnership between YUMSUK and the external clubs through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to enhance the university’s sports activities and community engagement.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to education and human development, Professor Kurawa was also presented with an award of excellence by the external clubs. In his remarks, he expressed his commitment of promoting partnerships that align with the university’s vision of achieving excellence in academics and extracurricular activities.

Professor Kurawa also reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting initiatives that align with the university’s vision of becoming a center of excellence in education and extracurricular activities.

Furthermore, the Acting Director of Security, Mr. Bala Lawan Kofar Na’isa, was honored for his efforts in maintaining safety and security within the university.

These achievements shows the visionary leadership of Mr. Ahmad Suraj, whose initiatives have elevated YUMSUK’s reputation as a center for sports.

Through innovative collaborations and impactful events, YUMSUK continues to strengthen its ties with the community, paving the way for a brighter and more dynamic future.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
