Among many academics of Physical and Health Education in Nigeria, very few can match Prof. Rabiu Muhammad, a professor of Physical and Health Education, in the Faculty of Education, Bayero University Kano.
Highly versatile but calm, Prof. Rabiu Muhammad has in his decades of successful academic career, lectured on diverse aspect of Physical and Health Education and even beyond and has produced many of the best brains in the field, who are today making waves in the field and occupying various top office of sports in Nigeria.
Born over 60 years ago in Kano, Prof Rabiu had his primary education in Masaka Primary School Kano 1969-1976, his Grade 11 Teachers Certificate in Bichi Teachers Collage Kano 1976-1980 and his Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in the Collage of Education (Kumbotso) Kano 1983-1986.
His thirst and love for higher education forced Prof. Rabiu Muhammad to Bayero University, Kano 1989-1992, where he bagged Bsc Ed PHE.
From 1998-2000 he got his M Ed Adapted PE Bayero University, Kano. He thereafter obtained his Doctorate Degree at the same Bayero University, Kano between 2002-2008.
Prof Chanhu as he was fondly called by his friends, football fans and followers due to his exploits in football during his playing days was first employed by Ministry of Education, Kano in 1986.
His sojourn in the university started in 1993 when he transferred his service to Bayero University, Kano where he rose to the position of a Senior Lecturer and now a professor.
A holder of many certificates, Prof Muhammad had his First School Leaving Certificate in 1976, Grade II Teachers Certificate in 1980, Fisu Commemorative Diploma of Sport Participation, China in 2001, Fisu Commemorative Diploma of Sport Participation, Korea in 2003 and Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1986.
Others certificates the prof he holds are Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. PHE) Second Class Honor 2.1 in 1992, M.Ed. Adapted Physical Education in the year 2000 and PhD Adapted Physical Education in 2008.
An erudite scholar, Prof. Rabiu Chanhu is a member of many learned professional associations. These include Nigeria Association of Sports Science and Medicine (NASSM), National Health Education Association, National Association of Physical, Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER-SD), Nigerian School Health Association, Center for Research and Development (CERAD), Nigeria Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS) and Nigerian Coaches Association.
He was also a member of Nigerian Association of Disable sports, Board Member Kano Pillars Foot Ball club, Member, Task Force Committee 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup and many others. The Physical and Health Education Professor is also a member of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Prof. Rabiu Muhammad is highly sought after especially, in the academic field due to his innate organizational and administrative qualities. Thus, he has served as levels coordinator of various levels and chairman of various committees in the university.
Administrative positions held by this great academic are Secretary Departmental Board Meeting, Chairman Staff Welfare Committee, Teaching Practice/Field Trip Coordinator – 1999 till Date, Patron Nigerian Association of Physical & Health Education, Recreation Sports & Dance (NAPHER-SD) BUK Chapter, Departmental Admission Officer, Member Departmental PG. Committee – 2008 – to date and Head of Department, Department of Physical and Health Education between 2010 to 2012.
Prof. Rabiu Muhammad has held and continued to hold several faculty position in the university. He was faculty of education Representative, University Sport Management Committee, faculty of education Representative on Security recruitment Committee, member, Faculty Accreditation Committee, Chairman Jury of appeal Faculty Inter Departmental Sports Competitions 2005 and faculty of education Representative, University Sport Consultative Committee from 2011 to date.

Prof. Muhammad is a prodigious writer and has turned out numerous scholarly articles, books and dissertations on several contemporary physical and health issues. This great educationist is an acclaimed scholar who has key interest research and has attended various conferences and seminars. And some of those he attended include:- 1992- Annual Conference of Nigeria Association of physical and Health Education Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER-SD) At National institute of Sports (NIS) Lagos; Paper Presented on Drug use and Abuse in sports,1997-National conference of Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), At Bayero University Kano; paper presented are “sports as the mirror of the society, attended annual conference of Nigerian Association of women in sports (NAWIS) Held at former House of Assembly; Asaba, Delta State Nigeria, annual conference of Nigerian Association of Physical, Health education, Recreation Sports and Dance. (NAPHER-SD) At Niger State college of Education paper presented, Sports and Recreational Activities for promotion of Health and Fitness of the physically Challenged Persons. And the Physical and Health prof has also presented many papers at various Seminars and Workshops such as:- Organized by Kano State Ministry for Local government held at Imam Wali Training Centre, Kano, he also presented paper on: “General Teaching and Coaching Guidelines for Football Coaches”, 2-Days State seminar Organized by the Office of the Special Adviser on Sports Development to the Executive Governor of Kano State for stakeholders held in Royal Tropicana Hotel, Kano, a paper “Psycho-motor Approach in School Sport Development” and Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) seminar held at Bayero University, Kano Paper Presented: “Sports as the Mirror of the Society’.
The new BUK DOS was a chairman of various committees which includes Chairman, Technical Committee Kano Pillars Football Club, Chairman, Saadatu Rimi College of Education Kano ALUMNI Association Committee, Chairman, Jury of Appeal Buk Sub-committee of Inter-faculty Games, and Chairman, Technical and Players welfare committee for CAF Championship League 2014.
Under University Committee membership, the new director of BUK Sports was a member of various committees as he was a member of NUGA Main Technical Committee, University NUGA Accreditation Committee, Buk University Participation Committee WAUG Football/Hockey championship, Security Recruitment Committee, Buk WAUG Technical Committee Football/Hockey Championship and University Sport Consultative Committee 2006 – date.
He was also a onetime the Chief Coach, Bayero University Football Team, Director of Sports, Bayero University, Kano and was reappointed in the same position by the vice Chancellor recently.
And for Non-Committee University tasks, the Prof was the Vice Chairman Kano State Special Sports Committee for the Disable People, Member, Kano State Technical Committee on Sports Development and Establishment of Sport Institute and Member Curriculum Review Development Committee for the Kano State Owned Institute Karfi.
Others include Member, Kano Pillars Management Board Committee, Member Kano State Disable Welfare Committee, Secretary, Engr. Dr.Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (the then Governor Elect) Sport and Youth. A lover of community services, the Prof was a member, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Security Committee, Kano State Sports Festival, Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Kano State Sports Festival, Nigerian Coaches Association (NCA), Member, Security Committee Ghana/Nigeria Nation Cup, Member, LOC Technical Committee Ghana/Nigeria Nation Cup and Chairman, Kano Wambai United Football Club.

He is also the Chairman, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso Kano ALUMNI Association Committee, Member, Kano State Technical Committee on Sport Development and establishment of Sport Institute, Chief Coach, Nigeria National University Football Team to World University Games (FISU) in China 2001 and Korea 2003.
A receiver of many honors and awards, Prof Muhammad won a Cash award and Letter of Commendation from University authority for winning First University Scholarship Award for the best student of Physical and Health Education Department in 1990, Certificate of Honor in recognition of outstanding contribution towards the development and upliftment of humanity of the community, Certificate of Honor from Kano State Government in recognition of support and contribution to the promotion and development of football in Kano State and Certificate of commendation for assisting in developing football at the Grass root level in and around Kano State.
The man who loves education with a passion, Prof Muhammad has supervised many Bsc, Msc and PhD students in both Bayero University Kano and other institutions within and outside the state. His position as a professor also earned him an automatic membership of senate of the Bayero University, Kano.
Prof. Rabiu Muhammad has contributed immensely to the area of Physical and Health Education in Nigeria which makes the VC of Bayero University to easily gave him another two year term as head of Directorate of Sports in Bayero University Kano.
His hobbies are sports and reseach.
