Bankruptcy: A pathetic story of Kano Pillars

Few days to the commencement of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Kano Pillars FC, one of the twenty teams that will feature in Nigeria’s big soccer event, is in a serious financial crisis.

Investigations by www.sportseye.ng revealed that ever since the new management were appointed some months ago, nothing was released to them for the running of the club and acting which forced the management to be constant borrowers from well-meaning individuals.

The team was said to have taken its financial requests to the government through the SSG’s office but nothing, nothing as a penny or kobo was not released to the team.

Some of the club management were said to be in the Secretary to the State Governor’s office almost every day from morning to night for the release of the funds to enable them switch into action but to no avail.

Our findings further revealed that the club is now heavily indebted to the point that some of its creditors have started turning their back to the club for the fair of uncertainty.

It was discovered that up to now the money the club used to travel to Delta state for NNL Super Eight was not released by the SSG’s office.

Lack of funds had also forestalled the management of the team to shelved participating in the pre-season tournament in Ijebu-Ode some days ago and another one to kick-start on Tuesday in Bauchi state.

Our findings also revealed that even the money for the renovation of the Sani Abacha Stadium, the stadium which Kano Pillars plan to use for their home matches, is yet to be released.

And unless the stadium is put in order before the NFF team of inspectors arrives, the possibility of Kano Pillars playing their home matches in Kano is zero.

And we all know that was the same action that led to the relegation of Kano Pillars FC to the NNL some years ago.

Our findings further revealed that the management could not even provide training kits such as canvas, bags, jerseys, balls etc to the players and their coaches. Even the balls that the club is using presently in their training are all not good enough for the team.

The Babangida Little led management was said to be in serious trouble as the paucity of funds is halting its plan to conquer other teams in the about to start league.

It was also discovered that the team could not even redeem some of the promises it made to the new players and coaches it signed some days ago which is making some of the newly signed players start to change their mind for another team.

All efforts to reach the chairman of the Interim Management Committee chairman failed as all his phone lines were switched off.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
