A vibrant wave of celebration swept through the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre as the Controller of Narcotics (CN), Dahiru Lawan Yahaya, took the anti-drug campaign beyond conventional methods by embracing sports as a tool for reform and rehabilitation.

The initiative which took place this morning, represents a bold step in redefining the fight against drug abuse, particularly among inmates who are often overlooked in national reorientation efforts.Kwamanda

The atmosphere was charged with excitement as inmates participated in tug-of-war activities designed not only for recreation, but also for mental rejuvenation, discipline, and social reintegration.

The event undoubtedly fostered a sense of unity and purpose within the facility, offering hope and a renewed sense of direction for many participants.Late Ibrahim Galadima, MFR: The Man

Speaking during the event, CN Yahaya stressed that the war against drug abuse must be holistic, combining enforcement with education, engagement, and empowerment.

He noted that sports serve as a universal language capable of breaking barriers, instilling positive values, and channeling youthful energy into productive ventures.

Officials of the correctional centre commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.

They expressed optimism that such programmes would promote behavioural change, reduce tension within the facility, and prepare inmates for a more productive, drug-free life after release.

The event also featured awareness sessions on the dangers of drug abuse, reinforcing the message that drug use poses serious health risks and must be avoided.

Earlier, two tug-of-war contests were held between the visiting NDLEA team and inmate teams, with the inmates convincingly defeating the visitors 2–0. In another contest between two inmate sides, Tramo and the Correctional team, the latter emerged victorious.

After the tug-of-war events, the Koroso dancers took to the stage, delivering an energetic performance that captivated and delighted everyone in attendance.

In a gesture of goodwill, the Kano State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), CN Dahiru Lawan Yahaya, announced the donation of a bag of garri, Klean detergent, and other essential items provided by the command’s enlightenment unit.

He also personally contributed a cash sum of ₦100,000 to support the inmates.

According to him, the donation is aimed at boosting inmates’ morale and reinforcing the message that rehabilitation and positive transformation are achievable.

The items are expected to improve inmates’ welfare, while the cash support reflects his personal commitment to their well-being and reintegration into society.

He further called for the establishment of a Drug-Free Club within the centre to collaborate closely with his command in sustaining awareness and strengthening ongoing anti-drug initiatives.

The Commander was accompanied by senior officers of his command, including the Sports Officer, Jamilu Uba Adamu.

Speaking on behalf of the State Controller of the Correctional Centre, CC Ahmed Yusuf, appreciation was extended to the NDLEA command for the visit and generous support, described as both timely and impactful.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
