Following his impressive track record in the broadcasting industry, Liberty Radio has appointed renowned broadcaster Muhammad Wasilu Kawo as Head of its Youth and Sports Unit.

    Kawo 3

Kawo, whose programmes at previous radio stations attracted a large audience in Kano State and beyond, assumed duty at Liberty Radio 103.3 MHz at the beginning of this month.

With his wealth of broadcasting experience, engaging presentation style and remarkable oratory skills, Kawo is expected to bring fresh ideas and professional standards to the station’s youth and sports programming while helping to expand its audience reach across Kano State and neighbouring states.

He is also expected to introduce new programmes and improve existing ones by adding professional touches that will make them more attractive to listeners.

Beyond programme development, Kawo is expected to share his broadcasting experience and professional skills with colleagues at the station. This will help build their capacity, improve their presentation skills and nurture the next generation of broadcasters.

Barely weeks into his new assignment, Kawo has already started presenting a new sports programme titled Jami’ar Wasanni, which airs every evening at 8:00 p.m.

Muhammad Wasilu Kawo is a vibrant and versatile sports broadcaster who has continued to make his mark in the industry, particularly through his engaging sports programmes at Radio Nasara.

Known for his confidence, clarity and understanding of sports journalism, he has established himself as a familiar voice among radio listeners, particularly young people.

His programmes have attracted considerable listenership, with many followers tuning in through their radio sets and mobile phones to enjoy his sports analysis, interviews and entertainment content.

His ability to connect with audiences through informative and entertaining presentations has earned his programmes considerable attention within the sports community.

Kawo began his broadcasting career at DARR Communication, where he developed his presentation skills and nurtured his passion for sports journalism.

His interest in sports reporting also took him into print journalism. In 2010, he established Taskar Wassani, a Hausa-language weekly sports newspaper that hit the streets every Saturday with sports news, reports, analysis and features.

In 2016, he joined DARR Communication, where he worked with Raypower and African Independent Television (AIT) Kano. His dedication, professionalism and knowledge of sports journalism earned him recognition and eventually led to his appointment as Head of Sports for the stations covering Kano and Katsina states.

When Radio Nasara was established, Kawo joined the station, bringing his experience and passion for sports broadcasting to the new organisation.

His commitment and professional contributions subsequently earned him the position of Head of the Sports Department.

His latest appointment at Liberty Radio represents another step in his broadcasting career, where he is expected to combine programme presentation with departmental leadership and the development of other broadcasters.

Beyond broadcasting, Kawo currently serves as Sports Director of Arewa Youth for Good Character, a non-governmental organisation committed to promoting sports development across Northern Nigeria.

Through this position, he participates in initiatives aimed at identifying and nurturing young talents, encouraging youth participation in sports and promoting positive values among young people.

He has also served in various media and advisory capacities within the football community.

His experience includes working as Media Officer for AA Arab Hotoro and Kawo Warriors. He also served as Media Officer and Consultant to Ashafa Zango of Ungogo and Royal Blue Ruga of Kura Local Government Area.

In addition, he has been an adviser to Danzaki Super Star FC of Gezawa since 2018 and Kawo Warriors FC since 2015, providing guidance and support to the clubs.

Earlier, in 2010, he served as Team Manager of Kawo Soccer Star FC.

Kawo is also the Chief Executive Officer of Wafiyya Hausa, a print and online magazine dedicated to reporting news and developments across Northern Nigeria.

Born in 1986, Muhammad Wasilu Kawo hails from the family of Alhaji Shuaibu Maitumaki in Kawo Quarters, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

He began his primary education at Kawo Primary School in 1993 before proceeding to Tarauni Secondary School in 2005. He later transferred to Rainbow Secondary School, where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate in 2008.

In his quest for higher education and professional development, Kawo attended Kano Polytechnic, where he obtained two National Diplomas.

His first National Diploma was in Public Administration in 2010, while he obtained another in Mass Communication in 2022.

He is currently pursuing a degree programme at the National Open University of Nigeria, Kano Study Centre.

Kawo’s involvement in sports goes beyond broadcasting and administration. During his playing days, he featured for several local football clubs, including Matasa United FC, AC Milan FC Kawo, Arsenal FC Kawo and Barcelona FC Kawo.

He also played for Good Boys FC Kawo and Kawo Soccer Star FC, winning several trophies and accolades during his active footballing career.

His practical involvement in football has contributed to his understanding of the game and enriched his sports broadcasting experience.

As a broadcaster, Kawo has presented several programmes across radio and television.

At AIT, he hosted Filin Wasanni on both radio and television, as well as Zabi Gwaninka, an entertainment programme.

At Radio Nasara, he presented several programmes, including Taskar Wassani, Dandalin Matasa, Duniyar Fina-finai, Fisabilillah, an interview programme featuring various interest groups in society, and Bata Hankalin Dare.

His experience across different programme formats reflects his versatility and ability to connect with audiences beyond sports broadcasting.

Kawo has also participated in several sports seminars and workshops, as well as a two-week agricultural training programme at Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Danbatta.

A former football referee, he remains actively involved in the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), reflecting his continued engagement with the sports journalism community.

Outside his professional engagements, Kawo enjoys football and entertainment.

He is happily married to two wives and a devoted father, balancing his broadcasting career and other professional responsibilities with family life.

    Malami mai nama

With his appointment at Liberty Radio, Kawo has another opportunity to demonstrate his broadcasting experience, contribute to the development of the station’s programmes and mentor colleagues.

Allah ya kara lafiya da daukaka. Amin.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
