Congregation Election: ADUSTECH’s NASU, SSANU candidates triumph

Comrade Jamilu Abubakar of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Comrade Ismail Hussaini of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have both emerged as the elected Congregation Representatives to the Governing Council of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil.

The election, conducted last Wednesday during the university’s 17th Congregation, was keenly contested, yet both candidates emerged convincingly victorious.

Comrade Jamilu Abubakar secured 287 votes, while Comrade Ismail Hussaini garnered 338, out of the 482 valid ballots cast.

Their strong showing reflects the confidence members of the university community have in their capacity to effectively represent the Congregation on the Governing Council.

With these victories, NASU, SSANU, and their ally, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) have effectively secured both available seats at the university’s Governing Council, a feat which have been described as a landslide and historic triumph for the coalition.

The outcome underscores the growing influence and unity among the non-teaching staff unions within the university community.

Speaking shortly after the announcement of the results, Comrade Hussaini, who also serves as the Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), expressed deep appreciation to the university staff for their overwhelming support.

He noted that the confidence reposed in him and his colleague was both encouraging and humbling, adding that the mandate would further inspire them to represent the interests of the Congregation with sincerity, commitment, and a renewed sense of responsibility.

Hussaini further added that the victory was not merely a personal achievement but an institutional milestone — a collective win for fairness, unity, and progress within the university system.

He stressed that the outcome reflects the shared desire of staff to promote equity and strengthen the voices of non-teaching unions in decision-making processes.

Also speaking, Comrade Abubakar extended his heartfelt appreciation to the entire university community for the confidence and support shown to him. He pledged to serve with humility, transparency, and a spirit of inclusiveness.

Abubakar assured staff that both representatives would work hand in hand with academic, technical, and administrative stakeholders to promote unity and drive forward the institution’s development agenda.

He emphasized that their collective mandate would be used to strengthen collaboration and ensure that the voices of all segments of the university are duly represented.

Observers noted that the election stood out as one of the most peaceful, transparent, and highly participatory exercises in the university’s history.

The orderly conduct and impressive turnout, they said, reflect ADUSTECH’s steadily maturing democratic culture and the increasing sense of unity and institutional cohesion among its staff.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
