30 Minutes with Kano Sports Commission Ag Chairman

    Ag Chairman

Early this morning, I had the distinct privilege of meeting face-to-face with Dr. Murtala Musa, the Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission and the state’s top sports administrator, in his office.

The meeting didn’t come by chance. It was made possible following a personal phone call I received from the Acting Chairman the previous evening, during which he graciously invited me for a chat.1Diamond2

Honouring the invitation, I arrived at the premises of the Kano State Sports Commission and proceeded straight to his office, where his messenger, Baba Dala, who is the oldest staff of the commission received me warmly.

After exchanging pleasantries with Baba Dala, he went inside to inform Dr. Murtala Musa of my arrival. Without hesitation, the Acting Chairman requested that I be ushered in immediately, reflecting his promptness and attentiveness.

To be candid, it had been over a decade since I last set foot on the premises of the Kano State Sports Commission, making this visit both nostalgic and significant.

Walking through the familiar offices once again, I was reminded of the Commission’s longstanding role in shaping the sporting landscape of the state.

As I stated above, the visit felt both nostalgic and revealing, as I couldn’t help but reflect on the lack of visible change in the surroundings of the Commission over the years.

Honestly, I could not notice any significant change in the physical structure of the Commission; it remains very much the way I have always known it.

The surroundings, the buildings, and even the overall appearance of the premises seemed largely unchanged over the years, a stagnation that I found rather disappointing and hard to appreciate.

Given its critical role in society, I had expected that by now the government would have recognized the need for a comprehensive renovation, one that would modernize the facilities, provide more suitable office accommodations, and include the necessary fittings and infrastructure to reflect the Commission’s significance and elevate its standing.

Upon entering the office, I was greeted by a young, composed, and serious-looking man seated confidently in the executive chair behind a neatly organized desk, exuding both authority and professionalism.

His upright posture and focused demeanor immediately conveyed a strong sense of purpose and readiness, giving the impression that he was fully prepared to handle the responsibilities and challenges of the day.

He greeted me warmly and invited me to take a seat across his large office table. I complied and, without hesitation, introduced myself, setting the stage for our conversation.

We then settled into a meaningful and insightful discussion that spanned various aspects of sports development in the state.

The conversation touched on ongoing programs, challenges facing athletes and sports administrators, and strategies for improving performance at both grassroots and professional levels.

He spoke candidly about his three months in office, sharing insights into the challenges he had encountered and the progress already made.

He emphasized how he and his team have been working tirelessly, day and night, to implement strategies aimed at improving sports in Kano.

His account reflected a deep commitment to creating lasting positive change, from nurturing young talent to enhancing the state’s sporting infrastructure, all with the goal of elevating Kano’s reputation in the national and international sports arena.

He also shared his vision for the future of the Commission, detailing ambitious plans to modernize sports facilities, strengthen talent identification programs, and implement forward-looking policies designed to raise Kano State’s profile both nationally and internationally.

His strategic outlook underscored a commitment not just to immediate improvements, but to sustainable growth that would position Kano as a leading force in Nigerian sports.

In fact, from my brief time with Dr. Murtala Musa, the Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, I came away convinced of his commitment to serve and deliver tangible results within the shortest possible time.

He displayed a clear readiness to collaborate with everyone, emphasizing that his focus is not on personal gain but on advancing the state’s interests.

What stood out most during our discussion was his unwavering vision to elevate Kano State’s image through sports, not only within Nigeria but on the global stage, by leveraging strategic sports development, effective administration, and a commitment to excellence at every level.

Judging by the seriousness with which he spoke, there is no doubt that our discussion offered a valuable opportunity to gain a clear understanding of his vision for sports development in Kano, his concrete plans to enhance the state’s sporting infrastructure, and his steadfast commitment to raising Kano’s profile both nationally and internationally.

When I inquired about the driving force behind his success, he humbly acknowledged the Almighty Allah (SWT) as his ultimate guide and source of strength.

He also expressed deep gratitude to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusif, noting how the Governor has consistently and graciously supported his initiatives by approving his requests, providing the necessary backing, and empowering him to implement his vision for the state’s sports development.

This acknowledgment reflected both his humility and his recognition of the importance of strong leadership support in achieving meaningful progress.

Our discussion proved highly fruitful, offering valuable insights into his vision and strategies for sports development. Unfortunately, it had to be cut short due to his demanding schedule and the meetings he needed to attend with his staff.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
