After defeating Taraba State University in a thrilling final at the University of Jos yesterday Friday, Bayero University Kano has made NUGA history by winning its first-ever gold medal in volleyball.

Fresh off a dominant 3–0 semi-final win over the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, the BUK ladies stepped onto the court with fierce determination.

Chief Coach Usman Abdallah had earlier charged his players to fight for every point and make the university proud and they rose to the moment with courage and conviction.

The final lived up to its billing as a pulsating showdown. Backed by a massive and energetic crowd, the BUK team displayed outstanding teamwork, tactical brilliance, and unshakeable resilience to overpower the highly skilled TSU side. Every spike, block, and serve reflected their hunger to make history.

Shortly after the victory, Chief Coach Usman Abdallah expressed profound gratitude to Almighty Allah for granting the team the strength and courage needed to defeat such an experienced opponent.

He described the performance of his players as exceptional, noting that the journey to the final was far from smooth. From inconsistent fixtures to unexpected match cancellations, the team had endured numerous setbacks but refused to lose focus.

He emphasized that winning this gold medal, the first in BUK’s volleyball history at the NUGA Games is a blessing that calls for deep appreciation. Abdallah added that this milestone will serve as a powerful motivation for the team to re-startegize and reenergize ahead of future competitions.

Assistant Coach Nafiu Yahaya, visibly moved by the achievement, praised the players for their commitment and hard work, affirming that the victory was the result of months of dedication and perseverance.

For Bayero University Kano, this golden triumph is more than a medal as it is a historic breakthrough and a bold statement of sporting excellence that will inspire future generations of athletes.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
