It is a fact that I am one of those that are hundred percent happy with ongoing  development in the national body of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) especially the impeachment of Mr. Isiah Benjamin as the national president of the association.

My happiness was borne from the way and manner he was leading and handling the affairs of the association since his assumption as the president of the association.

I am in particular sad with Mr. Benjamin for singlehandedly spearheaded the removal of Muhammad Mansour Ibrahim, the vice president (north) from his position with the connivance of Northern SWAN chairmen.

That was why the investigative committee that investigated him found him culpable and lacking in maturity to manage the office of the President of SWAN.

Remember that a good leader must respect, follow, and abide by his association’s working document in all he does. But Mr. Benjamin invited Northern Chairmen and suspended the VP and appointed Rilwanu Idris as Ex-officio in his place which  was unconstitutional.

And I remembered warning him against such unholy act but he went ahead and effected his desire which was the beginning of the crisis we are now witnessing.

My only worries and disappointment from the whole scenario  is the appointment of Gara Gombe as the Deputy National President.

I don’t know when the present President Otuekong Bonny Nyong registered Gara Ggombe as a member of SWAN.

Even though I know very little or nothing about Gara’s personal life, but the Gara I know is more of an administrator than sports writer.

The present leadership should quickly revert that appointment and look for more suitable person for the position.

They should remember that SWAN is a professional association, so only professional journalists must be in its fold.

I was at the production unit of the Triumph Publishing Company, Kano but my keen interest in sports journalism made me to be sports writer and maintained a sports column called (Sports Eye) after my mentor Sani Muhammad Zaria transferred his service to New Nigeria newspapers in Kaduna. And when the government closed the Triumph in 2012, I was transfered to lectured DTP in the Department of Printing Technology of Kano State Polytechnic. And now that I retired, i used to visit the institution weekends for part-time lecturing.
