The establishment of the State Payroll Standing Committee has been authorized by His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, in a clear attempt to guarantee superior wage administration and management in Kano State.

A statement signed by Musa Tanko Muhammad, Assistant Chief Information Officer in the SSG’s Office, Kano, on March 14, 2025, states that former Permanent Secretary Alhaji Auwalu Umar Sanda will serve as the committee’s chair.

The Permanent Secretary, REPA, SSG’s Office, Alhaji Umar Muhammad Jalo, on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouq Ibrahim, delivered the appointment letter to the chairman and described the committee’s purpose.

Receiving monthly salary updates from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), endorsing compensation variation updates for implementation and consideration, and communicating with MDAs, cooperatives, unions, and local suppliers for efficient salary management are some of the main duties of the committee.

Preparing briefs for His Excellency the Governor’s monthly wage approval and organizing and gathering monthly workstation updates for submission to the Office of the Accountant General are its additional responsibilities.

Alhaji Auwalu Umar Sanda’s appointment is a testament to his professional expertise, credentials, and exceptional record of accomplishment in public service, stressed SSG Alhaji Umar Farouq Ibrahim.

“His vast experience, patriotism, and commitment to the socio-economic development of the state were key factors in his selection,” SSG added.

In addition to congratulating the new chairman, he prayed for Allah’s wisdom, courage, and resolve to enable him to carry out his responsibilities with diligence and in accordance with the goals of the Kano State government and people.

In his response, Alhaji Auwalu Umar Sanda expressed profound gratitude to His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for entrusting him with this critical responsibility. He also sought the prayers of the people of Kano for Allah’s continued guidance and blessings to enable him to exceed expectations.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
