The Kano State Council of Retired Heads of Civil Service and Permanent Secretaries expresses condolences to the Kano State government following the deaths of 22 athletes, officials, and others.

According to a release signed by its imagemaker, Malam Muhammad Danyaro, which was mailed to this site on the 2nd of this month, the council expressed its deep sorrow and heartfelt condolence to the government of Kano state, families, and the entire people of the state over the tragic auto accident that claimed the lives of 22 comprising athletes, coaches, organizing secretaries, and others who represented the state at the just concluded National Sports Festival which was held in Abeokuta, Ogun.

According to the statement, the Council’s chairman, Alhaji Ishaq Mahmoud Umar, described the incident in a letter of condolence to the State Government as “devastating not only to the bereaved families but to the entire state and Nigeria’s sports community.”

According to him, the deaths of these young and dedicated youth and officials in the service of the state and the nation as a whole have left an irreparable void that will be impossible to fill in the short term.

“This is indeed a dark moment for Kano state considering the commendable efforts of the athletes and their officials who represented the state with pride, commitment and dedication and their exploits at the festival,” he stated.

While praying to Almighty Allah (SWT) to grant the deceased eternal peace and forgive their shortcomings, the chairman emphasized that their efforts would never be forgotten.

Alhaji Umar then prayed for the rapid recovery of those in the hospital beds.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
