No. 30 Sanusi Street, Sabon-Gari, Kano came alive yesterday as seasoned journalists, some from the sports community, alongside people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, as they gathered in large numbers for the burial arrangements and condolence visit in honour of Madam Lydia Andishu, the late mother of Abdulgafar Oladimeji, a respected sports journalist in Kano.
The atmosphere reflected a strong sense of unity, respect, and shared grief, as colleagues, friends, and well-wishers paid their last respects and stood in solidarity with the bereaved family during this difficult time.
Even before the commencement of the programme, Abdulgafar Oladimeji, one of the sons of the deceased, was visibly busy moving up and down.
He was seen actively coordinating the arrival of guests, at times personally guiding some of them into the hall.
He also spent moments on phone calls, assisting invited guests who were unable to locate the venue, ensuring they found their way without difficulty.
Before the formal proceedings began, the gathering naturally evolved into a moment of warm social interaction, offering attendees a rare opportunity to reconnect.
Many individuals who are not easily accessible were present and approachable, creating an atmosphere of openness and camaraderie.

For me, the occasion was particularly remarkable, as it provided a unique chance to come face-to-face with some of the most prominent and influential figures in Kano’s sports journalism landscape, the very individuals who are now shaping and defining the profession.
Moreover, even before the formal proceedings commenced, information was already made available through a statement signed by Chief Dominic Andishu on behalf of the family, indicating that the body of the deceased, who passed away on 16th April 2026, is expected to arrive at the family residence of the late Chief Samson on 8th May 2026.
The announcement helped to give structure to the programme of events, allowing attendees to clearly understand the timeline of activities leading up to the final burial rites and to make necessary arrangements to participate in honouring the departed.
A vigil is scheduled to be held later that same day at Andishu Kakum Village in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The gathering will provide an opportunity for family members, friends, and well-wishers to come together in solemn reflection, pay their last respects, and offer prayers for the peaceful repose of her soul.
The final burial rites will take place on Saturday, 9th May 2026 at 10:00 a.m., with interment to be conducted at the residence of the late Chief Samson.
The ceremony is expected to draw a significant number of sympathizers from within and outside the community, all coming to honour the memory of the departed and to stand in solidarity with the bereaved family during this period of mourning.
