The much-anticipated appointment of the Chairman, members, and Secretary of the Kano State Sports Commission has finally been announced, signaling a new chapter for sports administration and development in the state.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Malam Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, following the approval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

According to the statement, the governor approved the constitution of the commission as part of ongoing efforts to reposition sports in Kano State and restore its status as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting hubs.

Appointed as Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission is veteran sports administrator, Alhaji Tukur Babangida, a former Director of Sports in Kano State and a seasoned football administrator who served on several occasions as Chairman of Kano Pillars Football Club.

His vast experience in sports management and administration is expected to contribute significantly to the development of sports in the state.

Other members of the commission include Alhaji Balarabe Surajo, popularly known as Wamban Karaye; Ibrahim Abba, a former director of sports sector; Alhaji Sunusi Ismail; Auwal Surajo, representing higher institutions; Sani Musa Danja, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Affairs; and a representative of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).

Also appointed is Dr. Bashir Ahmad Maizare as Secretary of the Commission.

Dr. Maizare is a respected sports administrator who served as Director of Technical Services before his retirement.

He also held the prestigious position of Chairman of the Forum of Directors of Sports in Nigeria, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise in sports management and policy formulation.

The appointments have been welcomed by sports stakeholders across the state, who believe the newly constituted commission possesses the experience, technical knowledge, and administrative capacity needed to revitalize sports development in Kano.

Observers are optimistic that the new leadership will focus on strengthening grassroots sports, improving sports infrastructure, enhancing athlete welfare, and restoring Kano’s dominance in national and international sporting competitions.

The establishment of the commission is expected to provide strategic direction for sports development in the state and support Governor Yusuf’s vision of empowering youths through sports while promoting unity, talent discovery, and economic opportunities within the sector.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
