It was another remarkable sporting victory for Kano State as the Kano State Under-17 Volleyball Team emerged overall champions of the Habu Gumel North-West Volleyball Championship, held in Gumel, Jigawa State.

According to Ahmad Babandi Gama, Media and Publicity Assistant to the Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, the Kano youngsters put up an impressive performance throughout the championship, overcoming strong opposition from teams across the North-West to emerge overall winners.

The victory is another indication of the depth of sporting talent available in Kano State, particularly at the grassroots and youth levels.

It also comes barely two months into the leadership of Alhaji Muhammad Tukur Babangida as Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission.

The team’s success was celebrated at the commission’s premises, where the head coach, Danjuma Usman, his assistants and members of the victorious squad presented the championship trophy to Chairman Tukur Babangida.

Babangida, who could not hide his excitement over the achievement, received the team and congratulated the players and their coaches for doing Kano State proud.

Presenting the trophy, Coach Danjuma Usman expressed his happiness over the team’s achievement and commended the leadership of Tukur Babangida for providing strong support and encouragement to the state’s athletes.

Usman said he was particularly pleased to have Babangida as Chairman of the Sports Commission, describing his experience and knowledge of sports administration as valuable to the development of sports in Kano State.

He thanked the chairman for his continued support to the team and the athletes, while also giving glory to God for the success recorded at the championship.

Responding, Alhaji Muhammad Tukur Babangida commended the players and coaching crew for their hard work, discipline and commitment, which he said contributed significantly to the team’s success.

He noted that the achievement was a source of pride not only to the Kano State Sports Commission but to the people of Kano State as a whole.

Babangida urged the players and their coaches not to rest on their laurels, but to remain focused and continue working hard to achieve even greater success in future competitions.

He specifically charged the team to maintain the same level of commitment as they prepare for the National Intermediate Athletics Championships, scheduled to be hosted by Lagos State in October.

The Sports Commission chairman expressed confidence in the ability of Kano’s young athletes to compete favourably at the national level, while encouraging them to remain disciplined, dedicated and committed to continuous improvement.

He also wished the players and their coaches success in their forthcoming competitions and assured them of the commission’s continued encouragement and support.

The Habu Gumel championship victory has therefore provided an encouraging start for Kano’s youth volleyball programme and further underlined the importance of investing in grassroots sports development.

For the young Kano volleyball players, the triumph represents not only a significant achievement but also an opportunity to build confidence and gain valuable experience as they progress in their sporting careers.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
