Dominic Iorfa Case: Where Barau FC Erred

I was prompted to respond after reading the viral statement signed and issued by Ahmad Hamisu Gwale, the Media Director of Barau FC, on 11 March 2026.1Diamond

The reason for this reaction lies in the manner the team has chosen to handle the matter, which, if given serious attention, could resolve many of the issues it has raised.

To me, the statement released does not in any way provide a solution to the allegations levelled against the club’s General Manager, Mr. Dominic Iorfa.

For Barau FC to deny all allegations against the club’s General Manager, Mr. Dominic Iorfa, following reports of harassment and abuse of staff, coaches, and players, without constituting an independent committee to investigate and substantiate the claim was both wrong and entirely uncalled for.

This is because labelling the allegations as unfounded, misleading, and unfair was a grave mistake, as it prevented the club from identifying the very measures that could have saved the team from potential collapse.

To me, these serious claims hanging over the General Manager require a thorough investigation and proper resolution, so that the club can fully focus on its remaining activities and commitments.

This is because those subjected to his harassment and abuse are unlikely to perform at their best, let alone give their all to the team.

Therefore, the club’s claim that none of the team’s staff has been officially suspended does little to address the concerns raised, as those who speak out are simply seeking verification of the situation.

The only viable way to resolve the issue is to establish a small, independent committee to hear directly from those who allege they were harassed or abused.

To me, covering up the alleged injustice or high-handedness of the club’s General Manager cannot serve the club’s interests, and I am confident it does not have the approval of His Excellency, DSP Barau Jibrin.

I am confident that His Excellency, Barau Jibrin, established this club as part of his commitment to promoting sports development, not only within the state but across the country, providing a platform for talent cultivation and the growth of football nationwide.

Therefore, permitting or shielding anyone from accountability for harassing, abusing, or bullying the club’s staff is unacceptable and must be thoroughly investigated.

I am glad that those who raised the issue, even though they chose to remain anonymous, only called for proper verification, a process the team needs to undertake to uncover the truth of the matter.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
