Kano State has long been recognized as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting states. The people of Kano are not only passionate supporters of sports but are also active participants in various sporting activities.

From football and basketball to athletics, handball, and other games, sports have become an integral part of the state’s culture and identity.

Over the years, Kano has produced numerous talented athletes who have represented the state and the nation with distinction at local, national, and international competitions.

The state’s rich sporting history is evident in the successes recorded by its clubs and athletes, making Kano a household name in Nigerian sports.

Beyond competition and entertainment, sports serve as a powerful tool for promoting unity, peace, and social cohesion among the people.

Regardless of ethnic, religious, or political differences, sports bring residents together under a common purpose, fostering friendship, teamwork, and mutual understanding.

Sports also provide opportunities for youth development, talent discovery, and economic growth.

For many young people in Kano, sports offer a pathway to personal achievement, discipline, and a brighter future.

Indeed, sports remain a major source of pride for Kano State, reflecting the resilience, passion, and collective spirit of its people.

But with all that has been said, sports in Kano State today is facing one of the most difficult and challenging periods in its recent history.

Once regarded as a powerhouse of Nigerian sports, the state is now grappling with numerous challenges ranging from inadequate funding and other bottlenecks that impede its growth.

I am sure that His Excellency, the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is not fully aware of the magnitude of the challenges confronting sports in the state today.

It may interest His Excellency to know that the same financial crisis currently affecting Kano Pillars Football Club is also taking a heavy toll on Kano Pillars Basketball Club.

The basketball team, which is presently in Minna, the capital of Niger State, participating in the second phase of the Nigerian Premier Basketball League, is equally battling serious financial difficulties.

Despite carrying the hopes and aspirations of Kano State on the national stage, the team has continued to operate under difficult conditions, struggling with inadequate funding and limited financial support.

This situation is not only affecting the welfare and morale of the players and officials but is also threatening the club’s ability to compete effectively against better-funded opponents.

What makes the situation more worrying is that Kano Pillars remains one of the most respected sporting brands in Nigeria, both in football and basketball.

Yet, the players and officials representing the state are being forced to focus on survival rather than performance due to the prevailing financial constraints.

There is no doubt that sports have the power to unite people, promote the state’s image, create employment opportunities, and inspire young talents.

But, without adequate financial backing and timely intervention, these benefits may continue to diminish.

It is therefore necessary for the state government to urgently look into the challenges facing both Kano Pillars Football Club and Kano Pillars Basketball Club in order to prevent a further decline in the fortunes of Kano sports.

We thank Almighty Allah for helping Kano Pillars Football Club escape the threat of relegation during the last football season.

The club’s survival was a great relief to its supporters and football lovers across Kano State.

However, it is surprising and worrying that, despite the lessons of last season, the team is yet to commence any meaningful preparation for the upcoming campaign.

At a time when rival clubs are busy strengthening their squads, organizing pre-season activities, and putting their structures in place, Kano Pillars appears to be lagging behind.

We have reliably gathered that the club is currently weighed down by debts estimated at about N200 million.

This huge financial burden has made it difficult for the management to effectively run the affairs of the club.

More importantly, many of the club’s creditors, who had previously supported the team with goods and services on credit, are no longer willing to do so until their outstanding payments are settled.

This situation has created a serious challenge for the club and raises concerns about its readiness for the new season.

Without urgent intervention, the financial crisis could negatively affect player welfare, recruitment plans, training programmes, logistics, and the club’s overall competitiveness.

Kano Pillars is not just a football club; it is one of the biggest sporting institutions in Nigeria and a source of pride for millions of Kano citizens.

Similarly, Kano Pillars Basketball Team, currently in Minna, the capital of Niger State, for the second phase of the Nigerian Premier Basketball League, is also facing a serious financial crisis.

We gathered that the team travelled for the competition with little or no financial support, relying solely on assurances that funds would be released to them after their arrival in Minna.

Unfortunately, up to this moment, those promised funds have yet to reach the players, the officials or the team.

As a result, players and officials have been left to carry out their responsibilities under extremely difficult conditions.

Many of them are operating with empty pockets and, in some cases, struggling to meet their basic feeding and welfare needs.

This unfortunate situation has not only placed unnecessary hardship on the team but has also negatively affected the morale and motivation of both players and officials.

It is disheartening that athletes who are proudly representing Kano State and striving to bring honour to the state are being forced to contend with financial uncertainty while competing at a high level.

Rather than focusing entirely on their performance on the court, they are burdened with concerns about their welfare and daily survival.

Despite these challenges, the team has continued to show commitment, discipline, and determination.

The Kano Pillars Basketball Team, which has so far recorded four consecutive victories in the ongoing second phase of the Nigerian Premier Basketball League in Minna, has dedicated its impressive performance to the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Speaking of his team’s victory, the former head coach of the national basketball team and current Team Manager of Kano Pillars Basketball Club, Coach Sani Ahmad, said the successes recorded by the team were in recognition of the support and commitment of Governor Yusuf to the development of sports in the state.

Coach Ahmad disclosed that despite the serious financial challenges confronting the team, the players and officials remain determined to give their best and continue to make Kano State proud on the national stage.

According to him, the players have resolved to put their difficulties aside and remain focused on their mission of projecting the positive image of the present administration through sporting excellence.

He commended the dedication, discipline, and sacrifice demonstrated by the players and technical crew, noting that their commitment has been instrumental in the team’s unbeaten run in the competition despite operating under difficult circumstances.

Coach Ahmad, however, appealed to the Kano State Government to urgently come to the aid of the club by providing the necessary financial support needed to sustain its campaign.

He stressed that timely intervention would not only boost the morale of the players and officials but would also enable the team to achieve its objectives in the league.

According to him, Kano Pillars remains one of the state’s most valuable sporting assets and deserves adequate support to continue competing successfully and bringing honour and recognition to Kano State across Nigeria.

He expressed confidence that with the government’s intervention, the team would be better positioned to maintain its impressive form and challenge for major honours in the competition.

At this juncture, I wish to passionately appeal to the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, to urgently look into the challenges confronting both Kano Pillars Football Club and Kano Pillars Basketball Club.

Kano Pillars Football Club requires immediate financial intervention to offset its mounting debts and enable the team to commence adequate preparations for the forthcoming football season.

Failure to address the club’s financial obligations could further affect its operations, recruitment plans, player welfare, and overall competitiveness in the league.

Similarly, Kano Pillars Basketball Club, which is currently representing Kano State in the ongoing Nigerian Premier Basketball League in Minna, also needs urgent financial support.

The club is struggling under the weight of outstanding debts and financial commitments, including the payment of players’ and officials’ allowances as well as other operational liabilities.

It is important to note that both teams remain among the most visible ambassadors of Kano State in national sports.

Their successes bring honour, pride, and positive recognition to the state, while their struggles reflect the need for stronger institutional support.

We therefore respectfully call on His Excellency to intervene as a matter of urgency and ensure that the necessary funds are released to stabilize the two clubs.

Such intervention will not only boost the morale of the players and officials but will also demonstrate the administration’s commitment to restoring the glory of Kano sports.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
