Poor leadership: KSSC still adamant on unpaid Para-Games officials’ DTA

Months after the closure of the 2023 of the National Para Games which was held at the Federal Capital Abuja, Kano State Sports Commission is yet to source for funds and pay its officials and others their unpaid DTA.

We will not forget how the commission took a team of players, coaches, organizing secretaries, doctors, press, drivers, security etc to Abuja, the venue of the National Para Games empty handed without their DTA but with the promise of getting their pay on arrival.

The promise which the commission failed to redeem had put the entire team into serious and untold hardships while in Abuja.

That was how the entire team played their matches up to the mid of the event empty handed with empty stomachs.

That shameful and inhumanly action put the entire Kano team into an untold destitution as some of them especially those that do not or have anybody in Abuja, had to beg to eat and also find where to sleep.

The commission did another unforgivable blunder for failing to source for funds and do the needful to reduce the suffering of those people, they only told them that they were expecting funds from the government.

It was when the suffering continued with nothing coming from Kano as they were told until they voiced out their feelings which forced the Acting Chairman of the commission to say something.

Sadly, it was then he revealed the receipt of N9 Million out of the 30 Million approved by the government before their departure to Abuja which he held to himself alone before.

There then the acting chairman revealed that he used the N9million to pay for players’ registration and settled part of some players’ DTA which most of us doubted.

And when the team returned back, we expected the commission act fast and did all it could to source for funds and settle the entire members of the team but he failed again as the commission only sourced for funds and made another blunder by making selective payment which did not go down well to those that were not paid.

The commission shamelessly paid only players and the press crew DTA, leaving the rest empty handed which many put doubt on the seriousness and fairness of the commission.

To most people, exempting organizing secretaries, coaches, doctors, drivers etc was a big mistake.

From what transpired, the commission only recognized the athletes and the press crew as the most important part of the trip, forgetting that other members that made the trip too are of utmost importance.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
