READ ON: Muhammad Wasilu Kawo: New Nasara Radio Program Manager

I am particularly inspired by your track record of innovation, resilience, and commitment to nurturing young minds, the qualities that have undoubtedly distinguished you as the right leader at the right time.

As you take on this enormous responsibility, I join countless well-wishers in celebrating your achievement and expressing optimism for what lies ahead.

Once again, congratulations, Madam Prof. May your tenure be marked by wisdom, strength, transformative achievements, and lasting legacies that will shape generations to come.

To most of us, this remarkable achievement reflects your proven capacity for leadership and your unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

It underscores the confidence in your ability to steer the institution toward sustainable academic progress, uphold its core values, and strengthen its contribution to education and national development.

We therefore view your appointment as not only a recognition of your excellence, but also a call to serve with even greater impact and purpose.

I am confident that, under your guidance, Northwest University will continue to advance in academic innovation, research development, and community impact, while also nurturing future leaders who will contribute meaningfully to national and global progress.

Once again, I wholeheartedly celebrate this remarkable achievement with you and may your tenure be defined by extraordinary accomplishments, meaningful progress, and a legacy of excellence.

I pray that you continue to soar to even greater heights and record outstanding milestones that will inspire many both within and beyond your institution.

As a sports analyst, I find it both necessary and meaningful to write this piece, not only to once again extend my warm congratulations on your well-deserved appointment, which I humbly conveyed earlier, but also to respectfully draw your attention to an area of strategic importance: the development, promotion, and projection of sports within the institution.

This is because, sports, beyond competition, serve as a powerful tool for youth engagement, institutional visibility, talent discovery, and national representation.

It is on record that, universities that invest in sports development do not only build stronger student communities, they also earn recognition that transcends academics, placing the institution on a broader map of relevance and excellence.

It is in this spirit that I wish to emphasize that sports advancement should stand as a complementary pillar to academic success, the one that inspires students, strengthens the university’s identity, and creates pathways for athletic distinction at both national and international levels.

Your leadership should presents a timely opportunity to shape this sector, harness its potential, and project Northwest University, Kano as a force to be reckoned with in university sports and talent development.

Sports is no longer merely an extracurricular activity in universities, it has evolved into a powerful instrument for student engagement, talent discovery, institutional visibility, and the cultivation of community pride.

Through organized sports programs, universities are fostering discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience among students, while also projecting a positive image that strengthens their reputation locally, nationally, and even internationally.

Prof. I am confident that you understand even better than I do that a thriving sports culture plays a vital role in creating a balanced and well-rounded university experience.

This is because it contributes to academic stability by giving students a healthy outlet that complements intellectual rigor, while also fostering essential life values such as teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership.

A strong sports system builds students who can collaborate effectively, manage time responsibly, and perform under pressure qualities that translate positively into academic and personal success.

Beyond student development, a thriving sports culture has the power to elevate an institution’s visibility far beyond its physical boundaries.

Through competitions, institutional collaborations, strategic partnerships, and compelling athlete success stories, universities earn recognition that places them on both the national and global stage.

When student-athletes succeed, they become ambassadors of their institutions, carrying the university’s name into conversations of excellence, inspiration, and pride.

In today’s world, sports achievement is not separate from institutional success, it is a powerful pillar that can strengthen reputation, attract opportunities, and create a lasting legacy of impact.

For these reasons, I consider it timely to highlight the responsibility that comes with this leadership era, to invest in sports infrastructure, encourage professional sports administration, support student-athletes, and create programs that will nurture young talents across different sporting disciplines.

When strategically developed, sports can also become a strong symbol of unity, school identity, and a platform that inspires the youth.

I remain optimistic that, with visionary planning and commitment, your tenure will not only strengthen academics but also elevate sports in a way that will benefit the students and enhance the reputation of the institution as a whole.

I am also fully aware that your institution, despite being relatively new when compared to many older universities, has demonstrated impressive commitment by actively participating in nearly all higher institution sporting competitions national competitions like the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), Nigerian University Sports Council (NUSSA), and the Kano State Higher Institutions Games Association (KASHIGA).

This level of involvement is highly commendable, as it reflects a strong drive to build a sporting identity and create opportunities for students to compete, grow, and showcase their talents on larger platforms.

For a young institution, maintaining such consistency in inter-university games, national tournaments, and external competitions is not an easy task.

This participation not only benefits student-athletes but also helps the university gain recognition, strengthen school spirit, and build networks that can lead to future sports partnerships, sponsorships, and talent development programs.

However, despite all these encouraging achievements and positive strides in university sports participation, it is deeply saddening to acknowledge that the institution is significantly lagging behind in one critical area, which is the availability of standard sports facilities.

This shortfall has continued to slow down the university’s potential growth in athletics, limiting both performance and the overall progress of sports development within the campus of nearby institutions.

The absence of well-equipped training grounds, modern stadium infrastructure, indoor sports halls, functional gymnasiums, and other essential sporting amenities is gradually becoming a major obstacle of the Northwest University, Kano.

It affects regular athlete preparation, reduces opportunities to host major competitions, weakens student motivation toward sports engagement, and ultimately holds back the institution from fully maximizing the talents it continues to discover and promote.

Madam Prof, allow me to reiterate that the progress of sports in any university system depends not only on participation and passion but equally on the presence of adequate and enabling facilities.

These facilities are essential for effective training, skill development, and the pursuit of competitive excellence.

Without proper infrastructure, such as well-equipped gyms, practice fields, and modern sports equipment, even the most talented and dedicated athletes may struggle to reach their full potential.

In essence, sports facilities serve as the critical foundation upon which enthusiasm, potential, and raw talent are transformed into measurable achievements, national recognition, and lasting institutional pride.

They create the enabling environment that allows students to thrive, compete at higher levels, and convert passion into excellence that elevates not only individuals, but the reputation of the university itself.

Regrettably, this vital foundation is currently absent at Northwest University, Kano, where standard and well-equipped sporting infrastructure is, unfortunately, nowhere to be found.

The institution, despite its vibrant student population, athletic enthusiasm, and promising reservoir of young talents, continues to operate without the necessary facilities that could translate these strengths into concrete successes, sustained visibility, and competitive dominance.

The lack of adequate sports infrastructure not only limits performance and development, but also hinders the university’s ability to fully harness its human capital, inspire broader participation, and cultivate a culture of achievement that unites students, staff, alumni, and the wider community in shared pride and identity.

Therefore, investing in modern, accessible, and well-maintained sports facilities is not merely a structural upgrade but it is a strategic necessity that can unlock excellence, strengthen institutional spirit, and propel the university into a future where talent and enthusiasm yield results worthy of celebration and remembrance.

Therefore, it is truly disheartening that with all the university’s promising efforts, its sports advancement is being restrained by inadequate infrastructure, a challenge that deserves your urgent attention if the institution hopes to accelerate its sporting growth and compete favourably with its peers.

Yet, despite these glaring shortcomings and persistent infrastructural inadequacies, the university’s Sports Directorate unquestionably deserves high commendation.

In the face of limited resources, lack of standard facilities, and structural constraints that would ordinarily discourage progress, the Directorate has continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to student athletic development.

Their ability to sustain participation, nurture emerging talents, and deliver competitive performances under such challenging conditions reflects not only passion, but strategic leadership and a deep sense of responsibility.

The Directorate has kept the flame of sportsmanship alive, inspired students to push beyond environmental limitations, and ensured that the university remains visible in inter-varsity competitions, sometimes even earning medals and recognition where expectations were modest.

Their commitment has not only kept the spirit of sports alive within the institution but has also produced noteworthy results, earning recognition and sometimes even medals and trophies.

This level of achievement, in the face of significant challenges, reflects a team that is both passionate and resourceful, setting a strong example for what can be accomplished through determination and strategic effort.

I am confident that with your wholehearted support and strategic contributions to the Sports Directorate, Northwest University, Kano, stands poised to attain even greater heights of athletic excellence and institutional distinction.

Your leadership presents a unique opportunity to redefine the university’s sporting landscape by strengthening structures, inspiring collaboration, and prioritizing the development of modern and sustainable sports infrastructure.

With deliberate planning and strategic investment, the university can unlock the immense potential within its student body, nurture home-grown champions, and build competitive teams that will consistently excel at regional and national levels.

Your support would not only empower the Directorate to perform more effectively, but also cultivate a vibrant sports culture that fosters unity, discipline, national visibility, and a deep sense of institutional pride.

That is why by prioritizing the development of modern sports infrastructure and facilities, you can provide athletes and staff with the necessary tools and environment to train effectively, hone their skills, and compete at higher levels.

Such investments would not only enhance performance but also elevate the university’s reputation in sports nationally and internationally, attract talent, and inspire a culture of excellence across all levels.

In essence, your proactive engagement and commitment to infrastructural development can transform the sports unit from a unit of potential into a benchmark of achievement and institutional pride.

This is because, despite operating without access to standard and well-equipped sports facilities, the unit has consistently demonstrated remarkable resilience, professionalism, and an admirable competitive spirit.

Even under such constraints, the team has managed to organize programs, train athletes in another places, and participate effectively in competitions, and often achieving notable results.

Their ability to maintain high standards and inspire excellence in the face of infrastructural limitations speaks volumes about their dedication, resourcefulness, and unwavering commitment to advancing sports within the university.

It is particularly noteworthy that a young university, still in the early stages of its development, has managed to achieve such remarkable recognition in the realm of sports.

It reflects not only the resilience and dedication of the athletes but also the commitment and vision of the university’s Sports Directorate in nurturing talent and striving for excellence despite significant obstacles.

Their ability to win honors without the advantage of modern training infrastructure speaks volumes about their talent and tenacity, and it brings pride, visibility, and respect to the institution.

Only recently, the university’s contingent won a gold medal and several bronzes at the National Universities Games held at the University of Jos

They also competed in the Federation of International Sports Universities (FISU) games at Jos, where one student athlete secured a gold medal in taekwondo, earning an automatic qualification to represent Nigeria at the World University Games in Germany.

I am aware that the staff of the institution also show class at the Nigerian University Staff Sports Association NUSSA hosted by Bayero University Kano (BUK) where silver medal in badminton was won.

Your assumption of office comes at a critical moment when Nigerian universities are being repositioned to align academic excellence with holistic human development.

That is why, I humbly wish to offer this advisory note for your kind consideration, particularly on the strategic role of sports development within the University system.

    1. Strategic Importance of Sports in the University System: Globally, modern universities recognize sports not merely as recreational activities but as integral components of human capital development, leadership training, health promotion, and institutional branding.

A well-structured sports programme enhances student discipline, teamwork, national representation, and community engagement.

    1. Personnel Development: Sports Administrators and Coaches: It is respectfully advised that Northern University, Kano prioritizes the recruitment, training, and deployment of qualified Sports Administrators and Professional Coaches.

Such professionals serve as the backbone for sustainable sports development and institutional competitiveness at state and national levels.

    1. Sports Facilities, Teams, and Athlete Development: As I illustrated above, investment in standard sports facilities, organized university teams, and structured athlete development pathways will:-

Improve student participation and performance; Position the University as a talent hub for Kano State and Nigeria and Attract partnerships, competitions, and external recognition

Remembered that, a well-maintained facilities and active sports programmes are also important indicators during NUC accreditation assessments.

    1. Linkage to Human Kinetics and Health Education Department: A robust sports development framework will significantly support the University’s ambition to establish a Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education. This is because, practical sports programmes provide:-

A strong academic-practical foundation for the department; Evidence of institutional readiness during NUC accreditation visits and Opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching, research, and community service.

    1. Accreditation and Institutional Advantage: The National Universities Commission places emphasis on staff strength, facilities, student engagement, and societal relevance. A functional sports ecosystem directly complements these criteria and enhances the University’s overall accreditation profile.

Lastly, prioritizing sports development through competent personnel, facilities, and structured programmes will not only enrich student life but also strengthen Northern University, Kano’s academic standing, accreditation prospects, and contribution to state and national development.

Please accept, Professor, the assurances of my highest esteem and best wishes for a successful tenure.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
