Shake-up in Kano Sports Commission: Chairman, others removed, reassigned

A significant administrative restructuring took place in the State Civil Service on Friday, 2nd January 2026, marking one of the first major government actions of the year.

The official circular announcing the development was signed by Salisu Musapha, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Head of Service, Kano State.

The reorganization affected a number of state agencies and parastatals, with notable impact felt at the Kano State Sports Commission, where leadership at the highest level underwent an unexpected transition.

The shake-up led to the redeployment of the Commission’s Chairman along with two top directors, altering the administrative structure of the sports governing body.

As part of the new postings, the Commission’s Chairman, Malam Ibrahim Umar Yakubu, was reassigned to the Gabasawa Security Institute as Director of Sports, where he is expected to coordinate and strengthen sports programs within the institution.

In the same vein, Dauda Sirajo Dangwauro was transferred to the Sports Institute Karfi as Director, Special Duties, a strategic role that will involve handling special assignments and administrative priorities related to sports operations.

Additionally, Garba Shehu received a new appointment at the Informatics Institute, Kura, where he will serve as Director of Sports, overseeing sporting activities and initiatives aimed at talent discovery and development.

Following these changes, interim administrative authority at the Kano State Sports Commission will now rest with newly appointed overseers tasked with managing its affairs pending further government directives.

These appointees are expected to provide leadership continuity while ensuring that ongoing sports programs remain unaffected during the transition period.

Although the government has not yet issued a detailed public statement clarifying the motives behind the sudden redeployment, the decision is broadly interpreted as a deliberate move to restructure and reposition the Commission for enhanced efficiency, strategic coordination, and better performance in driving sports development across the State.

Stakeholders in the sports sector believe the restructuring could signal a new phase in policy direction, especially in areas concerning grassroots sports promotion, sports education, institutional sports integration, and administrative reforms within the Commission.

Further disclosures, including the full list of affected officials and additional details about the interim overseers, are expected to emerge in the coming days.

The development has continued to generate discussions among sports administrators, athletes, and policy observers across the State, many of whom view it as a turning point with the potential to influence the future trajectory of sports governance in Kano.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
