Sports Develpt in Kano: What Gov Abba should do

The term “sports development” describes the multidisciplinary field of education, community engagement, coaching, funding, policy-making, and talent identification that aims to increase participation in sports, improve athletic performance, and improve the systems and infrastructure that support sports at all levels from grassroots to elite.

It is a broad field that includes the deliberate use of sport to accomplish social, personal, and community development objectives like fostering peace, improving health, and developing skills, as well as the methodical improvement of a sporting system’s structures, rules, and participation pathways to guarantee its efficacy and sustainability.

It includes tactics to boost top performance, provide access to sports for all, and establish strong sports organizations and governance frameworks.

Additionally, the significance of sports development is numerous because it fosters holistic well-being by developing social skills like discipline, cooperation, and leadership as well as physical and mental health, it benefits both individuals and society as a whole.

In addition to supporting economic growth by creating jobs and infrastructure, it promotes community development by promoting social inclusion and offering a forum for constructive interaction.

Sports also aid in the teaching of values by fostering traits like perseverance and fair play.

It may also be an effective means of accomplishing more general societal objectives like gender equality and improved public health.

The following are some advantages of sports development for individuals:

Physical Health: Sports development lowers the risk of conditions like obesity and cardiovascular illnesses, enhances coordination and stamina, and helps grow strong bones and muscles.

Mental Health: Playing sports on a regular basis may improve self-esteem and a feeling of wellbeing while lowering stress, anxiety, and depression.

Cognitive Skills: Playing sports helps people focus better, think more strategically and analytically, and solve problems.

Social and Emotional Skills: Participating in sports fosters self-control, cooperation, leadership, goal-setting, fortitude, and optimism.

    Additionally, it benefits society.

Social Cohesion: By promoting a feeling of community, inclusivity, and belonging, sports can help to overcome social, political, and ethnic barriers.

Health Education: Sports programs may act as venues for disseminating health-related information, encouraging hygienic practices, and averting disease.

Economic Impact: Investments in sports facilities and events have the potential to boost local economies, provide employment, and draw in investment.

Values and Development: Sports support fundamental principles like honesty, equity, and decency, which advance human development generally and are consistent with programs such as the UNESCO Sport Values Toolkit.

Similarly, the growth of sports has a wide Social Impact Empowerment:

Young people, especially those from underrepresented groups, can be drawn to and involved in sports, which also gives them the confidence to take part in other developmental activities.

Public Health: Sports development significantly improves public health outcomes by promoting lifetime physical activity.

Nation Building: By bringing people together and addressing societal issues, sports serve as a catalyst for social, cultural, political, and economic growth.

Thus, sports development is extremely important since it promotes total physical and mental well-being through increased physical activity and stress reduction, while also boosting personal growth by teaching life skills like discipline, collaboration, and leadership.

In addition to being a potent instrument for social and cultural development, sports foster national solidarity, cross-cultural interaction, and peaceful cohabitation between people and nations. At the national level, sports development stimulates economic growth by generating employment and a lucrative industry.

However, it is a well-known truth that Kano State is the most sports-loving and sports-following state in the nation.

And the amount of spectators who used to fill the stadium whenever a league game was played there is proof of this.

However, the state’s lack of a significant number of sports facilities is impeding its growth and advancement.

The only stadium that is close to FIFA standards (Sani Abacha Stadium) which has a capacity of only 14,000 and is in poor condition in most areas as its Tatan track. Football pitch, toilets, dressing rooms etc are in poor state.

And if Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf musters the guts, gathers the funds, and constructs an Olympic-sized stadium and other sporting facilities around the state, his name will be inscribed on a gold flat forever.

This is due to the fact that he will be the first governor in the state’s history to recognize common sense and give sports the recognition they have earned since independence.

And due to its history in sports, especially football, basketball, and traditional sports, as well as the dominance of Kano Pillars Football Club in the north and throughout the nation, Kano State already has a strong sports culture in addition to its rich cultural legacy.

That is why the Kano State Government needs a structural development strategy that integrates infrastructure, business partnerships, grassroots efforts, and government backing in order to effectively promote sports in the state and maintain its supremacy in the area.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration must conduct a comprehensive analysis of the industry and put into action any recommendations that would enable the state to realize its goals.

Here is a detailed strategy to accomplish this goal and carry on the nation’s sports development race:

    Infrastructure & Facilities comes first.
The Sani Abacha Stadium should be completely renovated and expanded by the government to become a state-of-the-art multisport venue.

In every local government area, community mini-stadiums should be constructed, complete with basketball and volleyball courts, an athletic track, and a football field.

Additionally, the government ought to provide school sports facilities, such as fields, courts, and indoor gyms, particularly at colleges and secondary schools.

The Mahaha Sports Center ought to be transformed into a Kano Sports Village/Academy for boxing, wrestling, basketball, football, swimming and athletics.

Grassroots Talent Development is the second point.
Football, athletics, handball, basketball, volleyball, and other school sports should be revived by the government without delay.

To find potential in LGAs and other places in the state, the Kano Youth Sports Festival should be held annually.
In addition to connecting amateur events to professional teams like Kano Pillars (football, basketball, and handball), they ought to promote the establishment of regional academies and clubs with organized leagues.

The promotion of traditional and indigenous sports is the third goal.
As cultural sports, the government ought to fund polo, horse racing, dambe (boxing), and kokawa (traditional wrestling).

To conserve culture, draw tourists, and promote new sports like weightlifting, judo, and taekwondo where Kano athletes have demonstrated promise, they ought to organize the Kano Traditional Sports Festival every year.

Education, coaching, and capacity building come in fourth.
In order to balance education and athletics, the government should request that the Kano State Sports Institute train more coaches, referees, and administrators. It should also collaborate with Bayero University Kano (BUK) and other postsecondary institutions to conduct sports science research and offer scholarships to gifted athletes.

The fifth is funding and partnerships.
The Kano Sports Development Fund should be established by the government with assistance from commercial companies and donors.

In order to sponsor leagues and tournaments and promote corporate branding in sports (such as the “Dangote Kano Schools Football Cup”), they ought to collaborate with telecoms, banks, and manufacturing firms.

The sixth is the involvement of women.
In order to encourage women’s participation in sports at the grassroots level, the government should support female football (establish Kano Pillars Queens) and other sports including basketball, volleyball, and athletics; establish safe training facilities and contests for girls; and collaborate with non-governmental organizations.

Publicity & Media is the seventh essential.
The government could work with local TV and radio stations in the state to broadcast leagues and raise awareness of sports, utilize social media to highlight Kano athletes and sporting events, and honor Kano-born celebrities like Ahmed Musa as role models to motivate young people.

The Government Policy & Support is the final important factor.
The Kano State Sports Master Plan (2025–2035), mandatory sports in schools with a structured curriculum, and biannual state-wide sports festivals should all be implemented by the government.

Kano has the potential to become a sports hub for the whole country, not just Northern Nigeria, if all of these are managed and implemented consistently by the government of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

In no time, I’m sure Kano State can regain its dominance at the national level in sports like basketball, handball, Kano Pillars FC, and others,

The state may act as a feeder site for national teams in sports like football, basketball, wrestling, and so on, providing our state’s hordes of young people with a sure source of employment.

Last but not least, Kano State has a rich sporting history (large club fan bases, well-established stadiums, and a vibrant Ministry of Youth & Sport Development).

However, it requires a realistic, phased plan to improve facilities, increase competitions (particularly for women and youth), and obtain long-term funding and safety measures.

In order to professionalize facility management, expand the competition ecosystem, and safeguard athletes and spectators, this strategy calls for short-term “quick wins,” medium-term investments, and a three to five-year roadmap.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
