Last week, Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu, whom we fondly call Yaya Abdalla at home, celebrated his 70th birthday and drew the curtain on an illustrious career in public service.

To many, he is known as a distinguished teacher, an inspiring mentor, and a principled administrator. But to me, he has always been more than those titles.1Diamond2

He has been an elder brother in my early years and, over time, a father figure whose guidance continues to shape my path.

My connection with him dates back to childhood. Between 1989 and 1993, while I was a pupil at Tarauni Primary School, my admiration for him ran so deep that I adopted his name.

Even at that young age, my classmates began calling me Jamilu Abdalla, a nickname that has endured to this day.

I still remember his visits home from Europe during his years of study. Unlike others who returned with sweets or toys, he brought books.

At the time, I may not have fully understood the significance of those gifts, but they quietly planted in me a lasting love for knowledge and writing, one that continues to define me.

Years later, when I struggled with the confidence to write my book Takaitaccen Tarihin Asalin Wasan Kwallon Kafa a Kano, it was Yaya Abdalla who encouraged me to push forward.

Beyond words of motivation, he also offered financial support, ensuring that the project was completed. That gesture remains one of the clearest reflections of his belief in me.

There are countless memories, lessons, and moments that speak to who Yaya Abdalla Uba Adamu truly is, a man of intellect, humility, and deep commitment to others. It is impossible to capture them all in a single tribute.

As he steps into retirement, I join family, friends, students, and admirers in celebrating not just the end of a career, but the enduring legacy of a life well lived and meaningfully shared.

Mallam ɗan Mallam, jikan Mallam. Allah Ubangiji Ya ƙara masa lafiya da albarka.

I pray that this new chapter brings him continued good health, long life, and Allah’s guidance in all that lies ahead. Amin.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
