It is widely acknowledged that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State is demonstrating a leadership style that values consultation, openness, and responsiveness.
His willingness to listen to stakeholders, consider constructive advice, and act in the best interest of the people has contributed to progress in several sectors of the state’s development. The sports sector is no exception.
The recent appointments into the boards of the Kano State Sports Commission and Kano Pillars FC reflect the administration’s determination to reposition sports as a vehicle for youth empowerment, social development, and economic opportunity.Kano Sports at a crossroads: Tukur Babangida opportunity
By entrusting experienced hands with the task of restoring Kano’s sporting glory, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has once again shown his determination to rebuild institutions that can truly deliver victory and honour.
His commitment is not merely in words but in deeds that inspire confidence and renew hope.
That commitment became even clearer a few days ago when the sports community erupted in widespread jubilation after the governor listened to their calls and appointed capable leaders to head Kano Pillars Football Club and the Kano State Sports Commission.
Across stadiums, offices, and sporting circles, the mood was one of celebration and delight, a sign that the decision had struck the right chord.
In fact, most stakeholders across the state have warmly welcomed the appointments, believing that the newly appointed boards possess the experience, vision, and passion needed to return Kano sports to winning ways and brighter days.
From the terraces to the streets, the message rings clear and loud: because with capable hands now taking the lead, many believe Kano sports can rise again with speed.
Many believe the newly constituted boards especially for the Sports Commission, have the experience, competence and commitment required to restore the lost glory of Kano sports and reposition the Sports Commission as a leading force in talent discovery and sports development.
However, while the appointments have been applauded, expectations are equally high.
Sports enthusiasts believe that the new boards must be given the necessary financial, administrative and policy support to succeed in the enormous task before them.
With the right backing from the state government, the new leadership of the two can lay a solid foundation for sustainable growth, improved performance and a return to the era when Kano consistently produced champions and excelled in national sporting competitions.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf must recognise that meaningful progress in sports is only possible when the sector is adequately supported and funded.
While appointing competent leaders is an important first step, their success will ultimately depend on the availability of the financial resources needed to implement their programmes and fulfil their mandates.
To achieve the desired results, the state government should ensure the timely release of all requested and approved funds for both Kano Pillars FC and the Kano State Sports Commission.
One practical step Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should consider is returning Kano Pillars Football Club and the Kano State Sports Commission to the Governor’s Office for direct supervision.
Doing so would help eliminate the administrative and bureaucratic bottlenecks that have, over the years, slowed decision-making and delayed the implementation of key sports programmes.
This is because sports administration requires prompt decisions, especially on issues relating to funding, players’ welfare, recruitment, competitions, facility maintenance and other operational matters.
Subjecting these agencies to multiple layers of bureaucracy often results in unnecessary delays and time wasting that ultimately affect participation and performance.
By placing both agencies under the Governor’s Office, sports-related matters can be processed more efficiently, allowing urgent requests to reach the Governor for consideration and approval without undue delay.
This would not only improve efficiency but also demonstrate the government’s commitment to restoring Kano’s status as a leading force in Nigerian sports.
This is because adequate and consistent funding will enable the recruitment of qualified coaches and players, development and maintenance of sporting facilities, organisation of competitions, talent identification and nurturing, as well as the welfare of athletes and officials.
However, without the necessary government support, adequate funding, and an enabling environment, even the most capable management teams will only struggle to meet the high expectations placed upon them, leaving little or nothing to show for their efforts.
That is why Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should, without further delay, review and reverse policies that have weakened the operational capacity of the Kano State Sports Commission.
One important step Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should take is to return all revenue-generating points at the state’s sporting facilities to the Kano State Sports Commission.
It was reliably gathered that the former Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development unilaterally directed that all revenue-generating points previously under the supervision of the Kano State Sports Commission be transferred to the ministry.
The decision was widely criticised by stakeholders, who argued that it weakened the commission’s financial base, hampered its day-to-day operations, and undermined its statutory responsibility for managing and developing sports facilities across the state.
Many believe the move contributed significantly to the commission’s inability to effectively carry out its mandate.
That is why restoring these revenue sources back would strengthen the commission’s financial capacity and enable it to discharge its responsibilities more effectively, particularly in the management, maintenance, and development of sports facilities across the state.
As the statutory body responsible for implementing government sports programmes, managing sporting facilities and overseeing sports development across the state, the Commission is better positioned to administer these revenue sources and channel them towards the upkeep and improvement of sports facilities and its day-to-day activities.
The Ministry, on the other hand, is primarily responsible for policy formulation, coordination, and oversight.
The day-to-day implementation of sports programmes, as well as the management and administration of sporting facilities, falls within the mandate of the Sports Commission.
Respecting these distinct roles is essential for effective governance and improved performance in the sector.
For sure restoring the Sports Commission’s authority over its legitimate revenue sources would strengthen its financial capacity, enhance operational efficiency, and enable it to respond more effectively to the numerous challenges facing sports development in Kano State.
It would also reduce the commission’s over-dependence on government approvals for routine operational needs, allowing it to discharge its responsibilities with greater speed and flexibility.
Such a decision would further demonstrate the government’s commitment to empowering institutions entrusted with developing sports and delivering measurable results.
A financially stronger and more autonomous Sports Commission would be better positioned to revive sporting activities, maintain facilities, nurture talent, and restore Kano State’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting hubs.
As a listening governor, I am confident that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will take the necessary steps to further establish his place among Nigeria’s most sports-loving and sports-supportive governors.
