The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has postponed the commencement of the 2026 Commonwealth Games national trials by one day to allow athletes affected by severe weather-related travel disruptions in the United States to participate in the event.
In a statement signed by Maxwell Kumoye, Chairman of the AFN Media Committee, and made available to journalists, the federation announced that the trials, initially scheduled to hold from June 20 to June 22, will now take place from June 21 to June 23.
The competition will still be held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
The AFN explained that the adjustment became necessary following flight delays and cancellations caused by adverse weather conditions in parts of the United States, which affected the travel plans of several Nigerian athletes based abroad.
The federation noted that the decision was taken in the interest of fairness and inclusiveness, ensuring that all qualified athletes have the opportunity to compete for places on Nigeria’s team to the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Officials expressed confidence that the one-day adjustment would not affect the overall organization of the trials and urged athletes, coaches, and other stakeholders to take note of the revised schedule.
