Power tussle in Pillars: Who is who between  Mai Samba, board and Musa?

The same day that the Kano State Government appointeded Ali Nayara Mai Samba and 17 others as Chairman and members of Kano Pillars Football Club’s new Interim Management Committee, Ahmed Musa was appointed General Manager, too.

And since then, there has been much confusion regarding who is the team’s leader, with Musa purportedly issuing orders and directives on what he wants and who he wants to work with without first consulting the board.

Musa was said to have occupied the chairman’s chair during the board’s first meeting, which caused significant confusion over who was in charge.

This site’s investigation discovered that Musa is now acting as if he is superior to all 17 board members, including the chairman.

This is due to the fact that so many people have said or implied that the newly appointed General Manager of the club should take the club’s leadership role over Mai Samba and his board.

There was even a radio sports episode where the presenter and his guest openly stated that Musa, by appointment and position, is the boss of everyone, including the chairman and the board.

This is incorrect in my opinion, as well as in many others’. The sooner the government provides more clarity on who is who in the club, the better.

The government must quickly intervene and restore sanity into the club by informing or demonstrating Musa’s limitations as far as the club management is concerned.

Musa must be made to know that he is not the overall boss but only the General Manager (GM) of Kano Pillars Football Club.

He only controls the entire football organization, serving as a liaison between the club’s sporting, business sides and the board.

His responsibilities include strategic planning, player recruiting and management, financial monitoring, and ensuring the club complies with all regulations.

He also played an important role in stakeholder relations and the club’s overall operational success.

While the board is responsible for the club’s general governance and strategic direction. They establish the club’s vision and objectives, monitor financial performance, and assure legal and ethical compliance.

The board also chooses and reviews the CEO (General Manager) and other important staff, leaving day-to-day operations to the management team.

The board defines the club’s overarching mission, values, and long-term objectives; they create and approve the club’s strategic plan, which outlines how it will achieve its goals; and the board monitors the club’s performance against the strategic plan to ensure that progress is being made and resources are being used effectively.

The board authorizes the club’s annual budget and major capital expenditures. They ensure that financial information is accurate and transparent, and that the club is in compliance with all applicable financial requirements. The board also manages the club’s risk management practices to preserve its assets and image.

The board chooses the CEO, establishes performance targets, and analyzes their performance on a regular basis; they guarantee that the club has the proper individuals in the correct positions, as well as adequate training and support.

The board guarantees that the club operates within the law and in accordance with all applicable rules, as well as that it promotes an ethical culture and acts responsibly and transparently.

As for the relationship between a football club’s General Manager (GM) and the board of directors is one of accountability and reporting.

The GM is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the club, including administration, finances, and sometimes even player recruitment, and reports to the board on these matters.

So the General Manager’s Responsibilities are firstly to oversee the day-to-day running of the club, managing staff, and ensuring smooth operations across all departments.

The GM works with the board to develop and implement strategic plans for the club’s future.

The GM regularly reports to the board on the club’s performance, financial status, and any major issues or opportunities. The GM is responsible for executing the decisions and policies set by the board.

With the above I am sure Ahmed Musa will know or remove the ego on his head that he is the boss or above everybody in the club.

And bring the question of the working manual for the team because it is absence that brought all these embarrassments.

I was at the production unit of the Triumph Publishing Company, Kano but my keen interest in sports journalism made me to be sports writer and maintained a sports column called (Sports Eye) after my mentor Sani Muhammad Zaria transferred his service to New Nigeria newspapers in Kaduna. And when the government closed the Triumph in 2012, I was transfered to lectured DTP in the Department of Printing Technology of Kano State Polytechnic. And now that I retired, i used to visit the institution weekends for part-time lecturing.
