Kano Sports: Huge expectations for new Kano Pillars, Sports Commission Boards

Last week, the sports community in Kano State was filled with excitement and celebration following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s approval of the reconstitution of the boards of Kano Pillars F.C. and that of Kano State Sports Commission.

The appointments, announced by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, have sparked renewed optimism among sports fans, supporters and stakeholders, who believe the new leadership has the capacity to restore the lost glory of both Kano Pillars Football Club and the Kano State Sports Commission.

The appointments were widely welcomed by stakeholders and sports enthusiasts across the state, many of whom had long awaited the return of stable and effective leadership to Kano’s sports sector.

The announcement marked the end of weeks of anticipation and, for many, signalled the beginning of a new chapter for sports development in Kano State.

It also renewed hope that the state’s sporting institutions would once again be guided by purposeful leadership capable of restoring their past achievements.

Across football circles, as well as among basketball, volleyball, handball and other sports enthusiasts, there is a renewed sense of hope that the newly constituted boards will provide the leadership, direction and professionalism needed to revive the fortunes of sports in Kano State.

With the new football season fast approaching and the National Sports Festival around the corner, the expectations are high.

Both Kano Pillars Football Club and the Kano State Sports Commission face significant challenges that require urgent attention.

The new boards are therefore expected to hit the ground running by addressing pressing issues, restoring confidence among stakeholders and laying a solid foundation for sustained success across all sporting disciplines in the state.

Kano Pillars Football Club, one of Nigeria’s most successful football clubs, has in recent years struggled with administrative instability, financial constraints and inconsistent performances.

Likewise, the Kano State Sports Commission has faced enormous challenges in coordinating sports development, maintaining sporting facilities, nurturing young talents and supporting athletes across different sporting disciplines.

That is why the composition of the two boards has therefore raised expectations that experienced administrators and sports stakeholders will bring fresh ideas, transparency and accountability into the management of sports in the state.

Their success, however, will not be measured by the announcement of their appointments alone but by their ability to restore confidence, strengthen sports institutions, discover and develop young talents, and return Kano to its rightful position as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting states.

Without doubt, the celebrations that greeted the appointment of the new boards reflected the hopes of millions of Kano people who see sports not only as entertainment but also as a source of youth empowerment, social unity and economic opportunity.

The task before the new leadership is enormous, but with commitment, teamwork and adequate government support and funding, they will have an opportunity to write a new and successful chapter in the history of Kano sports.

For Kano Pillars Football Club, the immediate priority for the newly constituted board should be to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the club.

Such a review will enable the board to identify the club’s strengths and weaknesses, evaluate its administrative and technical structures, and develop practical strategies for improvement ahead of the new football season.

The assessment should encompass every aspect of the club, including the technical crew, the senior team and its junior sides, the medical department, financial management, the welfare of players and officials, transportation and logistics, as well as the club’s overall administrative structure.

Only by having a clear picture of the club’s current situation can the board develop realistic plans and set achievable goals for the coming football season.

The board must also engage with key stakeholders like coaches, players, supporters, former officials and football experts to obtain valuable insights into the challenges confronting the club.

Such a collaborative approach will undoubtedly help the board identify practical and lasting solutions based on facts and experience, rather than relying on assumptions or speculation.

In my view, once the areas requiring urgent attention have been identified, the board should move swiftly to address them.

Prompt and decisive action will be essential to stabilise the club, restore confidence among supporters and stakeholders and position Kano Pillars for a successful season.

Here’s a smoother and more polished version:

Given that preparations for the new football season are already underway, time is of the essence and cannot be wasted.

The new board must act swiftly to make critical decisions, strengthen the club’s technical and administrative structures, and ensure Kano Pillars is fully prepared to compete from the opening day of the season to its end.

This is because any delay in taking key decisions could hamper the club’s readiness for the campaign.

The new board must therefore act promptly to put the right structures in place and ensure Kano Pillars is fully prepared to compete at the highest level.

Every day counts, and any delay in addressing the club’s pressing challenges could affect recruitment, pre-season training, player registration and overall readiness for the campaign.

The board must therefore act swiftly and decisively to put the club on a solid footing before the commencement of league action.

Delays in resolving issues such as player recruitment, funding, outstanding debts, welfare, and logistics could negatively affect the team’s performance.

It is encouraging to learn from an online report that the new management, even before its formal inauguration, has already convened a meeting to begin preparations for the 2026/2027 football season.

This early initiative demonstrates a sense of urgency and commitment, reflecting the board’s understanding of the magnitude of the task ahead and its determination to tackle it without delay.

If sustained, such a proactive approach could lay a solid foundation for a successful season and help restore confidence among supporters and stakeholders alike.

With proper planning, sound management and timely decision-making, the new board has an opportunity to restore the club’s competitive edge and return it to its rightful place among the country’s football elite.

It is only after conducting a comprehensive assessment of the club, identifying its challenges and evaluating its immediate and long-term needs that the board should prepare and submit its budget to the state government.

Such a budget should be based on the club’s actual priorities and requirements, enabling the government to review, approve and release the necessary funds for effective implementation.

It is hoped that the new Kano Pillars management will uphold the principles of openness, transparency and prudence in all its dealings, particularly in the recruitment of players.

It is also by adhering to these values that will help build public confidence, promote accountability and ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of the club.

Over the years, player recruitment has been one of the club’s most contentious areas, with successive administrations facing criticism over questionable signings and a lack of accountability.

The new board must ensure that every recruitment decision is based on merit, the team’s needs and value for money, rather than personal interests or external influence.

Such an approach will not only strengthen the squad but also restore the confidence of supporters and other stakeholders in the club’s management.

As for the newly constituted board of the Kano State Sports Commission, it also has the enormous responsibility of restoring the state’s sporting fortunes, which have declined over the years.

The board is expected to provide the vision, leadership and strategic direction needed to revive sports development, nurture young talents and return Kano to its position as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting states.

The board faces the daunting task of returning the commission to an era when Kano State consistently ranked among the leading performers at national competitions and winning medals was almost a tradition rather than an exception.

Achieving this will require visionary leadership, sound planning, adequate investment and a renewed commitment to grassroots sports development.

The board of the Kano State Sports Commission must do everything within its power to revive the fortunes of sports such as basketball, volleyball, handball, hockey, and other disciplines in which Kano State once excelled.

I am sure the new board is fully aware that restoring Kano State’s sporting glory will require sustained investment in grassroots sports development, the rehabilitation of sporting facilities, the recruitment of qualified coaches, and adequate support for athletes.

By prioritising these key areas, the commission can rebuild the state’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting hubs and return it to its rightful place among the nation’s sporting elite.

To achieve this, the commission must prioritize grassroots sports development and ensure that competent and experienced coaches are recruited and adequately supported.

These coaches should be given the responsibility of identifying, nurturing and developing talented athletes capable of excelling at state, national and international competitions.

Beyond recruiting quality coaches, the commission must provide athletes with the necessary training facilities, equipment, regular competitions and welfare support to enable them perform at their best.

The new commission should prioritise the revival of grassroots competitions by organising state mini sports festivals, inter-school championships and inter-local government tournaments.

These competitions are essential for taking sports to local communities across the state, identifying and nurturing young talents at an early stage and creating a steady pipeline of athletes who can represent Kano with distinction at national and international competitions.

If these areas receive the attention they deserve, Kano State can once again become a dominant force in Nigerian sports, winning medals, trophies and laurels across different sporting events.

To accomplish these enormous responsibilities, both boards must, as a matter of urgency, identify their immediate and long-term needs and present them to the state government without delay.

This will enable the government to carefully review their proposals, approve the necessary funding and provide the required support in good time.

Timely intervention will allow both the Kano Pillars management and the Kano State Sports Commission to begin implementing their programmes without unnecessary delays and set the process of rejuvenating sports in the state in motion.

The task before the two boards is undoubtedly enormous, but it is not insurmountable. With vision, dedication, transparency and the full support of the government and stakeholders, they have the opportunity to restore Kano’s status as one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting states.

As they begin this important assignment, I join many other sports lovers in wishing the members of both boards a successful and impactful tenure.

The expectations are high, but so too is the confidence that they can deliver lasting results for the benefit of Kano sports.

I was a staff of the then Triumph Newspapers, with keen interest in sports journalism which drove me to the unit where I was supported and oiled in the dynamics of modern sports reporting by my mentor/friend, Sani Zaria, the then Group Sports Editor of the Triumph. And when he left in 1995, I tried to sustain the spirit against all odds with a column sportesye. But when The Triumph was closed, I was moved to Kano Polytechnic as a lecturer until my retirement last 3 years, which gives me time to return to what I know best , the recreation of the SPORTS EYE.
